National Drug Take Back Day - Success in Howard County!

On Saturday, September 26, the Howard County Police Department and HC DrugFree partnered to collect more than
500 pounds of unwanted or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications. Thank you to County Executive Allan Kittleman, Ellen Flynn Giles from the Board of Education, members of Soroptimist International of Howard County, teens from HC DrugFree's Teen Advisory Council, and all our volunteers. Thank you to Police Chief Gary Gardner and his staff for partnering with HC DrugFree throughout the year to reduce drug misuse.

Health & Human Services Department Unveils New Rules for Doctors Treating Opiate Drug Abuse
With the U.S. in the thick of what's been called a prescription-painkiller epidemic, the Health and Human Services Department announced plans to change a rule restricting doctors from prescribing medication to treat opioid abuse.

Underage Gambling - New Law in Maryland
Under a new law in the Annotated Code of Maryland, underage gambling citations issued to individuals under the age of 18 will be adjudicated in the juvenile court system and punishment can include fines, community service, or mandated participation in counseling for problem gambling. Individuals 18 to 20 years old who are issued an underage gambling citation will receive a summons from District Court to appear for trial where fines between $100 and $1,000 may be imposed.

E-Cigarette Use by Youth Linked to Future Intention to Smoke Conventional Cigarettes
According to the 2011-2013 National Youth Tobacco Survey, nonsmoking youth who had used e-cigarettes were nearly twice as likely to have intentions to smoke conventional cigarettes.

HC DrugFree's Teen Advisory Council (TAC)
HC DrugFree's Teen Advisory Council (TAC) meets one Monday evening a month from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM at The Barn (Oakland Mills Village Center) and is open to all Howard County high school students. The next TAC meeting will be held on October 12. Community service hours are available. Permanent Medication Disposal Boxes
Howard County residents can drop off unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications at 3 locations in the County where permanent disposal boxes have been installed. Boxes are located at the Howard County Police Northern District Station (3410 Courthouse Drive, Ellicott City) open 24/7, the Howard County Police Southern District Station (11226 Scaggsville Road, Laurel) open 24/7, and the Gary Arthur Community Center (2400 Route 97, Cooksville) open 7 AM to 9 PM Monday-Saturday, and 9 AM to 6 PM on Sundays.

Free Training to Save a Life! Opioid Overdose Response Training
If your child, spouse or friend is abusing opioids (prescription pain medicines such as Percocet or Vicodin, and street drugs such as heroin), attend the free training offered by the Howard County Health Department. The next classes are scheduled for Monday, October 26 at 10:00 AM, Monday, November 16 at 5:00 PM, and Monday, December 14 at 8:00 AM, all at the Health Department. Register by calling the Health Department at 410-313-6202.
