Transform your Shabbat with this insightful shiur series!

Meaning and Motivations:
The Reasons Behind Our Words and Actions

Tuesday, November 24, 2015
9:30 a.m.
Middle School Beit Knesset
Rabbi Dr. Alex Mondrow

Join us for our fall semester series of lectures for adults on Tuesday mornings at Yeshivat Noam! Beginning on October 13, Rabbi Dr. Alex Mondrow, YN Middle School psychologist and teacher, will deliver an eight-week series of classes exploring the meaning behind some of our religious actions and experiences. The series begins with a focus on Shabbat, and shares insights into Erev Shabbat, examines the meaning behind some of the laws of Shabbat, and rediscovers the nuance behind the Torah's statements about Shabbat, with special attention to the psychological dimensions of the day.

This shiur series is free of charge and is open to the entire community, so bring your friends! Brought to you by the Yeshivat Noam Parent Education Committee. For questions or more information, please email [email protected]

Rabbi Dr. Alex Mondrow is the Middle School Psychologist and a Rebbe at Yeshivat Noam. He also works in private practice in Teaneck.

His studies have focused on psychoeducational assessment and evaluation, substance abuse in adolescence, and parenting techniques.

Rabbi Dr. Mondrow lectures frequently on Torah topics and psychology.
Thanksgiving Food Drive: Nov. 2-20

Please join in our efforts to collect food for The Helping Hands Food Pantry of Teaneck. This is a wonderful opport unity to teach our children about the importance of helping neighbors in our communities who are not as fortunate, especially during the holidays.

Please help your children participate by sending them with cans of food and other non-perishable food items to add to the collection boxes in front of the offices. No glass, please. As a reminder, please mark your shopping list for items such as pancake mix, canned tuna, pasta, sauces, cereal, oatmeal, Parmalat milk, beans, canned fruits and vegetables. Please help us make this a successful drive!

For more information, please contact our Chessed Committee Co-Chairs Amy Birman and Loretta Paley.
School Spirit Day on December 1st

Students should wear school colors and our logo wear in school! Any Yeshivat Noam T-shirt may be worn, or any orange shirt with blue bottoms (boys must be wearing long pants and girls skirts).
This will be an exciting day for all of us to show our love for Yeshivat Noam.

Thank You to the Grandparents Who Joined Us on Sunday for the Fall Grandparent Breakfast

Thank you to the Grandparents that joined us for Breakfast Sunday morning to learn more about Yeshivat Noam. Thanks to those that logged in to watch the presentation on the live feed.

Here is the slideshow from the event and some photos of the Grandparents that joined us.

Veterans Day at Yeshivat Noam

Yeshivat Noam observed Veterans Day with special programming, guest speakers and patriotic music. Lieutenant Myles Melnicoff spoke to the middle school students. Colonel Dr. Carl Singer, Yeshivat Noam grandparent, spoke to elementary school students. Sgt. Tzvi also spoke about his military experience. The students left with a greater appreciation for the United States veterans after this important programming, organized by the Parent-School Partnership and their dedicated parent volunteers.

Third Graders Measure at Math Time

The third graders practiced measuring items in the classroom (including themselves!) using the length of an average class shoe. Using something they are all familiar with helps the students better understand units of measurement.

Students Send Cards to Cheer Up Children in Hospital

Third graders wrote and decorate cards to send to the children being treated in The Valley Hospital.

First Graders Learn About Tzedakah

Parent Volunteers from the Yeshivat Noam Chessed Committee read the book "One Good Deed" by Terri Fields for the first grade classes. Following the reading, the parents discussed the book and the concept of mitzvot with the class, and then introduced an art project inspired by the book. The students decorated zippered tzedakah pouches to fill with tzedakah at home and return to school.

Socratic Seminar in Social Studies

In Ms. Eisenman's Social Studies class, students engaged in a Socratic Seminar style discussion. Students followed a rigid format of conversation meant to help students delve deeply into an issue, cite evidence from non-fiction texts, and discuss a matter with each other rather than raising their hands in a classroom format. Students in the "inner circle" led their own discussion about whether the football team the Redskins should be required to change their name. Student i n the outer circle "coached" the participants, making sure everyone was having equal speaking time, that substantial points were not missed, and that textual evidence was part of the conversation. After several minutes, the roles were reversed. The seminar allowed each class to have a nuanced and spirited debate. It was wonderful to see our students talking and debating with each other like real social scientists might!

Annual Campaign & Dinner Honorees

Dear Yeshivat Noam Family and Friends,

It is with great excitement that we announce the honorees of the 14th Annual Yeshivat Noam Dinner, which will take place Wednesday evening, March 16, 2016 a t Congregation Keter Torah in Teaneck, New Jersey.

The Guests of Honor will be Tammi & Bennett Schachter, the Community Service Award will be given to Miriam & Gabriel Hermann and the Faculty Recognition Awardees will be  Arwen Kuttner  from  our Elementary School and  Yehudit Liebb  from our Elementary School/Middle School.

We are delighted to have the opportunity to express our appreciation to these exceptional lay leaders and our outstanding educators, for going above and beyond in their dedication to Yeshivat Noam.  Please mark your calendars for a special evening where the extended Yeshivat Noam family can celebrate together.

We are grateful to Tova Gerson and Nechama Saks who are co-chairing the Dinner Committee and Dovid Warshawsky and Ronnie Weinblut who are co-chairing the Annual Campaign.

The Annual Dinner Campaign is Yeshivat Noam's largest annual fundraising campaign to support the operations of the school including the scholarship fund, professional and curricular development, educational materials, technology advancements and faculty salaries. Like all yeshiva day schools, Yeshivat Noam's expenses exceed the dollars collected through tuition payments and other obligatory fees.

The Annual Campaign goal is to enable Yeshivat Noam to deliver excellence, while providing an accessible education regardless of financial circumstance.  Please make Yeshivat Noam a philanthropic priority when you consider your pledge of support. Each gift, regardless of amount, will be appreciated and is important in reaching our goal of 100% participation.

We are looking for volunteers to assist in video production, dinner details and fundraising. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Amy Vogel, 201-261-1919 x126 or [email protected] to join one of these committees.

We look forward to celebrating together at this special occasion.

Sincerely,

School Lice Policy

Dear Parents,

At Yeshivat Noam we make a very strong effort to keep our school as lice free as possible. However, in order to reach this goal we need your help. We ask that you please do the following:

* If you travel out of the country, especially to Israel, please have your child checked by a professional lice checker upon your return and one week after returning from abroad
and bring in a note from the lice checker stating they are cleared for school.
 * If your child is reporting that their hair is itchy, or you notice them scratching their head a lot, please take this seriously and have them checked professionally.
 * If your child is sent home from school with lice, please work with a professional to have the lice and nits removed.

In addition, please be aware that once a child is allowed to return to school, it means that they are lice free and are not a risk to spread lice. Please do not instruct or encourage your child not to play with someone who has been cleared to return to school.

Thank you for your partnership.

Rabbi Chaim Hagler
Principal
