Dear Friend,

I am excited to celebrate my first quarter in the New York City Council! What an incredible journey I have begun with each and every one of you to chart the next chapter of our extraordinary district, at this exciting time in our city's history! As I travel across this district, I have met and spoken with so many of you who have expressed support, offered advice, and shared ideas on how we can make our community more inclusive of the many established and new voices that reside in the 35th Council District.

Under the leadership of Speaker Mark-Viverito, the Council passed the expansion of the Paid Sick Leave Bill, to which I proudly signed on, and I was proud to stand next to Mayor de Blasio as he signed it into law. This is a tremendous victory for working families!

Thousands of New York City parents can now breathe a sigh of relief after I co-chaired the first Universal Pre-K hearing with Council Member Daniel Dromm, which resulted in a state allotment of $300 million to expand the current structure. Please click here to find out more and to share with your community.

District 35 constituents expressed street safety concerns, I listened and responded. I organized a Vision Zero Town Hall meeting in conjunction with the Department of Transportation (DOT) and New York State Assemblyman Walter T. Mosley. Following our Town Hall, DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg promptly announced that Atlantic Avenue would be one of the first 50 roads slated for review. Our seniors and youth are victims of vehicular-pedestrian accidents at disproportionately higher rates. Last Wednesday, I stood alongside DOT Commissioner Trottenberg and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) Chief of Transportation, Thomas Chan as they proudly announced that the first Arterial Slow Zone would be implemented in the 35th Council District along Atlantic Avenue!

Women's HERstory month was a celebration of not only the pioneers and trailblazers of the movement but also an opportunity to empower young women to pursue careers where women are underrepresented. I was ecstatic to welcome Amanda Marte, a sixth grade student from Brooklyn East Collegiate Charter School and resident of Prospect Heights, as my "Council Member for the Day". She also joined me for the culmination of such a remarkable month with my inaugural #WOMENLEAD celebration in the Council Chambers. As Chair of the Committee on Women's Issues, I remain committed to addressing the issues that matter most to women such as pay equity, public safety, quality healthcare, STEM, sex education in our schools and domestic violence.

The work continues, and I really need all of you to get involved by attending community meetings, voicing your concerns and sharing creative solutions to solve our greatest challenges. Your input plays an invaluable role in how we govern our city.

Warm wishes to friends and neighbors that celebrate Passover and Easter!

Connect with my office and let me know how I can be of service to you, our district and citywide.

Yours in Partnership,

Laurie A. Cumbo
