Getting Started

I am very excited to begin this new adventure as Director of the Whitaker Institute.  I am grateful to the search committee for their work of discernment, to the Advisory Council, to the other excellent candidates for the position and to Bishop Gibbs for extending the call.  I am also enormously grateful to Knena Causey, Whitaker's talented and gracious Program Assistant, and to the Rev. Michelle Meech who has worked with great vision and diligence to re-energize Whitaker and its programs and to lead us in some exciting new directions.  She deserves all of our thanks for doing so much for Whitaker in addition to her main job as diocesan ministry developer.

Speaking of exciting new directions, this Fall we are launching a new formation program for deacons and total ministry teams.  Its full title is "The Whitaker Institute and Coppage-Gordon School for Ministry Academy for Vocational Leadership."  The Academy is the fruit of a partnership between the dioceses of Michigan and Eastern Michigan and will be a three-year program consisting of ten weekend retreats each year.  I am also excited to report that the Saturday academic sessions will also be open to clergy and laity.  You can read more below.  Please contact me if you have questions.

I would like very much to visit with deaneries, parishes, vestries, and clergy and lay leaders to discuss what adult Christian formation looks like in the diocese and in your local setting and how I and Whitaker can support and equip you to hear and respond to God's call.

You can reach me as follows:
4800 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI 48201
Office:  (313) 833-4412
Fax: (313) 831-0259
Cell: (248) 385-6060

May the summer bring you refreshment of body, mind and spirit.

Faithfully,
Eric Williams

Upon completion of all sessions and approval of the instructors, you will be a licensed lay preacher in the Episcopal Diocese of Michigan. Register early because space is limited! Permission from your supervising clergy is required.

Before becoming a priest in 2007, Ian taught undergraduate creative writing at the University of Michigan where he earned a Master of Fine Arts in fiction writing. He has a passion for words and for helping new preachers develop their unique voice in proclaiming the gospel.

Worship Leader Licensure Course

Leading worship requires much more from us than an ability to read and understand the directions in the Book of Common Prayer. The Worship Leader class is designed to prepare you to craft and lead non-Eucharistic services of worship, especially Morning Prayer.  Over the course of three 6-hour sessions, on a calendar set by the class at its first meeting, you will learn all the basics of planning worship according to the Church canons and the rubrics set out in the Book of Common Prayer. More importantly, you will learn about the preparation, wisdom, and confidence needed to lovingly lead God's people in prayer. You will be required to lead worship in the time between class sessions.

Registration: Register on or before October 22. Permission from your supervising clergy is required to attend.

Date:  The class meets 3 times beginning Saturday, Nov. 1. The dates of other sessions will be determined by the group during the first meeting. All sessions are required.

Location: St. Paul's Church, Brighton, MI

Course fee: $150. Scholarships are available.   Download the scholarship form here.

Safeguarding God's People is a diocesan requirement for anyone in a pastoral or one-on-one situation, such as Eucharistic Visitor or Pastoral Caregiver. This training includes guidelines for the prevention of misconduct in all pastoral relationships. It covers healthy boundaries; high risk situations; the abuse of power; accountability; ethical and theological concerns; and diocesan policies and procedures, to ensure safety in our congregations.
