 PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
President's Message
Cherise Schacter, CSI, CDT, President

July 1st marks the beginning of my term as President of the Portland Chapter.  Please accept my gratitude for your vote of confidence as I step into this role.

For those that don't know me, I have worked in the Portland AEC industry for the better part of 30 years.  One year at Emerick Construction as a young kid, 23 years at SLX Architects and now completing my fourth year at Interface Engineering.  It is fairly safe to say that I have touched a lot of areas of areas in this industry and have done so from different perspectives... READ MORE >

July Chapter Meeting: Architectural Scavenger Hunt

Grab a map, the clues, a compass, and comfortable shoes- it is our Third Annual Architectural Scavenger Hunt!

This year we focus on 12 buildings in and around Portland State University- the educational center of our city. Each team will be provided with two clues about an exterior feature of the building, the year constructed, and a historic tidbit wherever appropriate. It will be your team's job to find the building, provide the name of the building (or the address) and the team with the most correct entries wins. Simple concept and a lot of fun.

Meet us on July 8th at 5:30 in the outdoor space between Smith Memorial Student Union and Lincoln Hall on the PSU Campus- 1825 SW Broadway.

After the Scavenger Hunt, awards for best team(s) will be presented at the newest pub on campus - the Rogue Brewery, 1717 SW Park Avenue, where we can meet to relax and have a lively conversation.

The cost for participation is free.  All guests at the "after-hunt" will be responsible for their own bills. REGISTER HERE >

  • People's Choice Award for Best Theme - Glazing Saddles Chili as prepared by Kathy Hempel, Sandy Betts, Craig Robbins, and Mark Atteridge.
  • Grand Champion Trophy as selected by our celebrity judge went to the defending champions -  CSI Kraken Chili including Fred Larson, Alicia Clark , Linda Joens, and Cherise Schacter.

 EDUCATION
Education
Cherise Schacter, CSI, President-Elect, Committee Chair

The Education Committee has been on a little break during summer to recharge for the new fiscal year.  Have no fear; we are meeting on July 15th to kick the new year planning into high gear.

The committee achieved all of its goals and has some great ideas that will begin in the fall.  You can expect to see a continuation of our lecture series as well as some other special events.

Our aim is to provide low cost, valuable educational opportunities for our members and industry professionals at large. As an added bonus, there is usually beer and pizza involved in the nominal fee (typically $10).  How can you lose with that deal?  Keep your eyes peeled for details coming soon.

CERTIFICATION
Certification
Kathy Hempel, CSI, CCCA, Certification Chair, Board Director

Certification exams are coming soon!  Registration opened June 2nd, and exams will be offered September 29 to October 25, 2014 in the U.S. and Canada.

Did you know that you don't have to be a member of CSI to take the exams?  It's true.

The Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) exam promotes an understanding of contractual agreements, roles, responsibilities, drawings and specifications, construction delivery systems, and how to develop organized, effective construction documents.

CDT Candidates are encouraged to obtain a copy and read the AIA-A201 General Conditions, the CDT Study Guide & Addendum from the CSI-Institute webpage, located under the "Certification/CDT/Exam Prep" tabs, and become familiar with the CDT exam requirements.

Feeling advanced?

Advanced exams are also available for those who have already received their CDT accreditation:  Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA); Certified Construction Specifier (CCS) and Certified Construction Product Representative (CCPR).

The goal of CSI's certification program is to educate those in the construction industry so that construction documents present information in a thorough and consistent manner, which results in a higher quality process from procurement through construction completion.

Need a study group?  Call us!

The Portland Chapter does not have a fall CDT Prep Class scheduled at this time.  If we have a significant number of people interested, we would be happy to put something together. Just let us know.

Please contact Kathy Hempel at [email protected] with questions about getting your study materials, scheduling your exam or getting a class together.

 KRAKEN
Rule #82: Value your gifts and share them
Cherise Schacter, CSI ,CDT, #CSIKraken

It is so hard each month to pick one or two members to thank for their service.  There are so many who contribute in making CSI Portland one of the most vibrant in the country.

First, I would like to thank Chris Irwin for her service and dedication as President of the Portland Chapter over the last year.  Chris has been involved in more areas of this Chapter than I can count (or am probably even aware of) and is always willing to step in where needed to get the job done.  Thank you Chris for your services and I look forward to your guidance as I step into your shoes.

Tim Cockburn, CSI Board Member and Chili Cook-Off Planner Extraordinaire. For the second year in a row, you made our reinvented awards event one not to be missed.  Your hard work and planning made it even more fun than ever.  Be assured that I am taking good care of the Grand Champion Trophy, yet again, so you have something to work towards next year. Thank you Tim, and BRING IT ON!

Next time you see one of these individuals, take a moment to thank them for their dedication to the Portland Chapter of CSI.

 CSI NATIONAL NEWS
NW Region Leadership Workshop Recap
Kathy Hempel, CSI, CCCA, Board Director, Certification Chair

A group of recently elected leaders from CSI chapters around the Northwest Region, including Willamette Valley, Cook Inlet, Spokane, Mt. Rainier, Portland and Puget Sound, met at McMenamins Edgefield to spend some quality time strengthening our leadership skills.

Martin Powell and Perry White organized the weekend to sharpen the skills we will need to further develop our chapters.  I'm sure it was a challenge, but they braved it well.  We gathered on the evening of May 29th to get to know each other and have a drink or two (who doesn't have a beer or glass of wine at Edgefield). Our sessions on Saturday and Sunday were filled with insights into ourselves and how we communicate with others, how to run a planning session and of course, how to navigate CSI National's website.

Saturday started with our guest speaker John Hersey, President of TTI Success Insights.  He helped us read the DISC personality assessment we took earlier in the week. John did a great job of clarifying why we do the things we do and how to adjust our communication and work habits when interacting with others. The training was practical and insightful, and addressed universal topics for any group working with volunteers, and Martin helped us realize how to apply them specifically within CSI.  We learned how to ensure our programs support our mission and expand our overall impact and outreach.

My takeaway from this exercise is this: Everything we do in life communicates a message to others

In a leadership role, it is important to make sure we are communicating the right message. Effective communication is therefore one of the most important leadership skills we possess.

Construct 2014 Annual CSI Convention

Registration has opened and the countdown has begun.  At this writing, 79 days, 1 hour, 33 minutes and 10 seconds until CONSTRUCT begins in Baltimore on September 9-12th.

The education sessions are published and the Institute is changing things up this year.  The convention is cram packed with cutting edge education, events, networking and more.

Please consider joining us in Baltimore!  Register early as some events and classes will fill up fast.

CONSTRUCT coincides with the 200th birthday celebrations of the Maryland War of 1812.  If an awesome CONSTRUCT was not enough of a draw, then this anniversary of a notable event in our history is just icing on the cake.  If you have not yet attended CONSTRUCT, this would be an incredible year to start. Don't miss it!
