AT anOctober  Festivities

It is October! These days are filled with fun times and parties. So what can you do at your work, school, or home to be more inclusive?

An important place to start is by working to understand an individual's needs. Sometimes accommodations might just be asking about appropriate foods or finding a location that is accessible for all.

AT is there to help everyone participate in season fun!

It is also time for the ALATEC conference October 2o-21. Make sure to attend and learn about AT and programs available statewide.

Halloween

Halloween is the perfect time to get creative with costumes and games. There are plenty of great ideas about how to make this busy holiday more inclusive for the whole family.
This article has great ideas and tips on how to keeps kids safe at school and while trick-or- treating, as well as  costume ideas for different disabilities  (physical and cognitive).  A "not so scary" sensory tables are also a great idea. Marshmallows, small pumpkins, and gummy worms are all fun to feel as opposed to the fake eyes and pumpkin insides you might find at Halloween parties.
There are also loads of "How To"s for sensory and wheelchair costumes. This Coolest Homemade Costumes site even has a section just for wheelchair ideas.
Last, but not least be sure to check out the #HalloweenWithoutLimits Costume Contest!
Accessible Fun in Alabama

Magnolia Corn Maze and  Seward Farm have confirmed that parts of the farm a re wheelchair accessible. Both are farms, so they are not 100% accessible, but they do have activities individuals with wheelchairs can participate in. Here is a list of the corn mazes in AlabamaCorn Dodgers Farm has a dirt corn maze, but it is at least four feet wide through the path.
There are alternatives to the traditional pumpkin carvings as well. Painting and decorating pumpkins has become very popular. This alternative is less messy and dangerous tools are not needed.
