In 2012, IMLS, MacArthur Foundation, ULC and ASTC launched a robust 18-month planning and design process for 24 teen-centered "Learning Labs" across the U.S. Join members of the Learning Labs community for a conversation about the project, hear about key findings from NYU's 18-month study and engage in discussion about recommendations in critical areas such as collaboration, teen engagement, space design, staffing models, outcomes and funding strategies.

Attendees will be introduced to and discuss a framework to think about and authentically evaluate their current services and identify opportunities for improvement based on community need. This session will be built on the framework of the Edge that assesses technology based on community value, engaging the community and organizational management. From this shared understanding, participants will join group discussions based on a case study and share solutions and best practices in using technology to advance learning.

ULC Proposes Board Slate 2014-2015

The ULC Executive Board has proposed a slate of members for 2014-2015. Members will be asked to vote on the slate on June 24 during the member breakfast which takes place during the NEXT Conference in Chicago. The proposed Executive Board slate includes three distinguished new members: Mary Blankenship Pointer, Chair, Pioneer Library System Board of Trustees, OK; Jill Bourne, Director of Libraries, San Jos� Public Library, CA; and Rhea Brown Lawson, Executive Director, Houston Public Library, TX. Get Onboard with The White House Maker Faire

In celebration of the burgeoning MakerSpace movement, the White House has invited the ULC community to get involved. In anticipation of the upcoming Maker Faire, ULC members can get involved in two important ways: by signing a letter that signifies support for "an all-hands-on-deck approach to science, technology, engineering and math...to make sure that all of us as a country are lifting up these subjects..." and by cataloguing your library's MakerSpace programs. Get involved!

E-RATE REFORM UPDATE

Over 100 ULC member libraries are signatories to a letter sent to the Federal Communications Commission calling for reforms to the nation's E-Rate policy so that public libraries have equitable access to public funds that ensure a digital future for all citizens. E-Rate is the FCC program, mandated by legislation, that helps libraries and schools pay for telecommunications services, including Internet access. FCC Chair Tom Wheeler is leading an overhaul of the program to better meet the needs of libraries and schools - today and in the future. Learn more.

Brooklyn, Queens and the New York Public Libraries have collaborated to produce a powerful short film that depicts they myriad ways that millions of citizens use the library every day and advocates for the restoration of funds that will enable the libraries to be open more hours and days, fully staffed.
