From the Executive Director

Spring Greetings!

In addition to all of the great work that your regional planning commission is doing, which you will read about in this newsletter, we are working with our counterparts in northwestern Illinois and eastern Iowa, and Southwest Technical College and Northern Iowa Community College, on an application to the US Department of Commerce, Economic Development Administration (EDA) for the Tri-State area to be formally recognized as an advanced manufacturing area of excellence. The official designation is recognition under EDA's "Invest in Manufacturing Communities Partnership (ICMP). This would advance the group's work of bringing training, research, and investment dollars to the region. We will keep you informed as to our progress.

And since we are on the economic development subject I also want to share this message to you. It comes from a man I deeply admire (please forgive his writing in the masculine form of the era) - Mahatma Gandhi. SWWRPC shares his belief that the customer the most important thing in business and service. You are why we exist. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you. Happy Spring! LTW

"A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption in our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider in our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favor by serving him. He is doing us a favor by giving us an opportunity to do so."  Mahatma Gandhi.

Southwestern Wisconsin Regional Housing Study
Southwestern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission has completed a market study, the Southwestern Wisconsin Regional Housing Study, which specifically provides statistical and narrative data identifying a housing profile in Southwestern Wisconsin. The Study describes the current situation related to housing supply and demand, home ownership, and affordability challenges. The Study can be used to determine new policies, programs and/or incentives offered in the Municipalities.

EMSI
Economic Modeling Specialist International (EMSI) Analyst software is a web-based economic development tool that includes extensive industry and occupation data. SWWRPC has been given access to EMSI Analyst software by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation to help provide economic data to communities in the State.

SWWRPC staff is accepting requests for information utilizing EMSI software from County and local economic development organizations and units of government in the Region.  The software program can provide industry and occupation reports by county, zip code, or an area defined by multiple counties and/or zip codes.

For more information, please contact Ed White (608-732-6659).
Tele-behavioral Health Network Project

SWWRPC is in the initial stages of a Tele-behavioral Health Network project, which aims to increase behavioral health services access in Richland and Iowa County.  Over the next two months, SWWRPC planners will be meeting with county departments and agencies to identify fiscal and operational efficiencies a tele-behavioral site may provide to the area. SWWRPC and the project partner network will determine the new tele-behavioral health sites in the communities that have the greatest chance for success. This project reflects an investment in a larger program of coordination for the delivery of behavioral health services in rural southwestern Wisconsin.

For more information on this project, please contact Katherine Burk, (608-342-6005).
