A First Friday Gallery Night Event

The History Center

401 E. State/MLK Street, Suite 100

Ithaca, NY 14850

Our next installation of Captains, Commerce, and Community will feature boats and boat building. A vibrant industry in Tompkins County during the 19th century, there were eleven boat yards in Ithaca in 1866 at the height of the boat construction boom. Several prominent local families built financial empires building or operating lake and canal boats at a time when the transportation of people and goods relied heavily on boat traffic. Majestic steam boats sailed Cayuga Lake from the earliest voyage of the Enterprise in 1821 to the tragic downfall of the Frontenac in 1907. Artifacts highlighting the boat builders' craft as well as images celebrating the courtly steamers can be viewed starting on

Friday January 9th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM

We hope you will join us for our opening reception of this second installation.

Welcome to Our New Board Members!
An Annual Meeting Update

The History Center

401 E. State/MLK Street, Suite 100

Ithaca, NY 14850

At the Annual Meeting on December 8th, 2014, The History Center Staff and guests greatly enjoyed a talk by Craig Williams, recently retired from the New York State Museum (and previously a Director of the DeWitt Historical Society!) about the early years of the Erie Canal. His lively comments and beautiful pictures were a great complement to our Erie Canal exhibit. Those present also elected two new members to the Board of Trustees.

Bob Kibbee is the retired Map Librarian from Cornell University Libraries and brings a deep love and knowledge of local maps to our exhibits and programs at The History Center. He is also a great bagpiper!

Jane Mt.Pleasant is an Associate Professor in the School of Integrative Plant Science and also affiliated with the American Indian Program at Cornell University.  Jane's interest and research in indigenous cropping systems, their productivity and links to contemporary agricultural sustainability, fit right in with our work at THC.

Welcome to Bob and Jane!

In the Moog

A Lecture and Book Signing Event

The History Center

401 E. State/MLK Street, Suite 100

Ithaca, NY 14850

Saturday, January 31st, 2015

2:00 to 4:00pm

Trevor Pinch, the author of Analog Days: The Invention and Impact of the Moog Synthesizer, will give a lecture followed by a book signing. Analog Days (with a foreword by Bob Moog) is considered the definitive book on the history of the Moog synthesizer.

The Electronic Music Synthesizer has become a major instrument of rock but where did this instrument come from and how did it come to transform rock and popular music in general? In his lecture, Trevor Pinch will trace its history in upstate New York through synth pioneer and engineer Robert Moog. Pinch will explore how bands, such as the Beatles and the Doors, used the Moog and how psychedelic rock took up the instrument through bands, such as TONTO's Expanding Head Band, who went on to make the Moog sounds on Stevie Wonder's breakthrough album "Music of My Mind". Come follow the synth into retail music stores in the 1970s and the influence of Prog Rocker Keith Emerson. The lecture will be accompanied by video and sound clips of classic Moog works.

Trevor Pinch is a Goldwin Smith Professor of Science and Technology Studies and Professor of Sociology at Cornell University. He is also a musician who lectures and performs on Moogs and about Moogs all over the world.

This event is in partnership with the Bob Moog Foundation.
