Trevor Pinch, the author of Analog Days: The Invention and Impact of the Moog Synthesizer, will give a lecture followed by a book signing. Analog Days (with a foreword by Bob Moog) is considered the definitive book on the history of the Moog synthesizer.
The Electronic Music Synthesizer has become a major instrument of rock but where did this instrument come from and how did it come to transform rock and popular music in general? In his lecture, Trevor Pinch will trace its history in upstate New York through synth pioneer and engineer Robert Moog. Pinch will explore how bands, such as the Beatles and the Doors, used the Moog and how psychedelic rock took up the instrument through bands, such as TONTO's Expanding Head Band, who went on to make the Moog sounds on Stevie Wonder's breakthrough album "Music of My Mind". Come follow the synth into retail music stores in the 1970s and the influence of Prog Rocker Keith Emerson. The lecture will be accompanied by video and sound clips of classic Moog works.
Trevor Pinch is a Goldwin Smith Professor of Science and Technology Studies and Professor of Sociology at Cornell University. He is also a musician who lectures and performs on Moogs and about Moogs all over the world.

Join us for a First Friday Gallery Night event with a tasty spin! Author Laura Winter Falk will explore the culinary history of the Finger Lakes region from the Haudenosaunee's Three Sisters to today's vineyards, farmers' markets and farm to table restaurants.
Falk will cover topics including:
- The Haudenosaunee and the Three Sisters
- Post Revolutionary War Homesteading
- 1800s Farming, the Volstead Act, and the Birth of the New York College of Agriculture in Ithaca
- The Growing Temperance Movement
- Prohibition Era and the Creation of the College of Human Ecology and Cooperative Extensive Nutrition Outreach to Regional Farm Wives
- Expansion of Grape Growing in the Region
- The Farm Winery Act and the Impact on Area Farmers
- Local Chefs in Tompkins County
- And more!
A youth group from the Seed-to-Table Experience (a part of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County - a non-profit organization that puts knowledge to work in pursuit of economic vitality, ecological sustainability, and social well-being) will prepare food based on recipes from Falk's book, Culinary History of the Finger Lakes: From the Three Sisters to Riesling.
Falk will give two presentations - one starting at 5:30pm and the other starting at 6:30pm.

The Stewart Park Merry-Go-Round
A Conversation in Conservation and a Month of Painting

Join us for a conversation with Monte May who owned the Merry-Go-Round in Stewart Park from 1985 until 1998, and Annie Campbell who painted the horses in 1986. Monte will tell us stories of how you get to own a Merry-Go-Round, how they work, what it takes to maintain one, and, of course, all about the horses! Annie will tell us how she got the job painting the horses, how she did it, and why they were painted the way they were. This will be a fun conversation - come and tell us your experiences too!

February 10th - February 28th, 2015
During February, Christie Sobel will be painting four horses from the Stewart Park Merry-Go-Round at The History Center. The City of Ithaca now owns the Merry-Go-Round and this winter, Christie will repaint the horses to be ready for summer enjoyment at the park by old and young alike. Come and see how it is done and talk with Christie about her work.
