First Magellan 6Fr Cases Presented at GEST

Prof Sapoval performing robotic embolization from remote Magellan workstation.

At GEST 2014 in San Francisco, course Co-Director Prof. Marc Sapoval presented the first clinical cases with the Magellan 6Fr Robotic Catheter. The cases, including two Uterine Fibroid Embolizations and a Transarterial Chemoembolization (TACE) procedure for liver metastasis of colon cancer, were the first in a 25 patient study at name of hospital studying robotic embolization procedures. His talk reviewed the procedures and detailed potential benefits of robotics in embolization procedures; primarily precise, predictable navigation in tortuous anatomy, stability for targeted therapy delivery, and radiation reduction for the operator.

First 6FR Cases in US at Houston Methodist
Dr. Lumsden with his Hansen support team

Alan Lumsden, MD, and his team treated two patients with the recently FDA cleared 6Fr Catheter at Houston Methodist Hospital in Houston, TX. The cases included an endovascular aneurism repair (EVAR) to treat an abdominal aortic aneurysm and a lower extremity intervention for the treatment of peripheral artery disease.

"I am very pleased to have completed the first clinical procedures in the United States using the 6Fr Robotic Catheter," explained Dr. Lumsden. "As an existing user of the Magellan 9Fr Robotic Catheter, our team is very familiar with the Magellan Robotic System. The lower profile 6Fr catheter enables robotic procedures with a smaller access puncture. Further, the smaller diameter makes it likely to be very valuable for lower limb procedures, particularly when encountering tortuous anatomy."
