THE POINT
St. John's parishioner, Marilyn Austin's play
"THE POINT" is performing at Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church, 201 Fourth St., SE, Washington, DC,
now through October 10th.
This wonderful play portrays a woman who had a successful professional life as a physician and is now struggling with the challenges of life in retirement.

"THE POINT"

Dear St. John's,

One of the great challenges facing our churches in this generation is to foster in all the faithful a sense of personal responsibility for the mission of the Church, and for a much more active engagement on the part of the people in the pews, our members. (Pope Francis)

Nowhere is the need for this level of commitment and personal responsibility more evident at St. John's than the level of support for the Annual Mission budget of our parish. This past Sunday at the new Adult Forum & Cafe, Nancy Eichacker, co-chair of the Rector Search Committee, described the dilemma that this creates for our parish:

While there are excellent women and men clergy interested in serving this parish, the candidates' compensation requirements exceed what we are currently offering. This is not surprising in that our early parish projections for our 2016 Mission Budget reveal that our aggregate giving is not at a level that can support even a mid-point salary based on the cost of living in our metropolitan area.

Our Lord is calling us to give out of love and faithfulness, not out of habit.  We ask that those who can, consider increasing your current pledge, or level of giving, by 20% for 2016. [ 20% of $1600 is $320 or about $6 more a week. Please make your own calculations ]. Every gift or commitment is important; if every household gives generously, God will bless the Body of Christ at St. John's as we commit ourselves to a more vital and faithful witness in 2016.

Faithfully,
Doug Perkins, Sr. Warden
John Price+   Interim
welcome bishop james almasi

THIS Sunday,  October 4th, African Palms welcomes Bishop James Almasi, 9th Bishop of the Diocese of Masasi, Tanzania to St. John's. Bishop Almasi will be preaching at the 8:00 and 10:00 am services.  Immediately following the 10am service, please join us at a Meet and Greet reception in his honor in the Parish Hall.
search committee update

The St. John's recruitment period ended this Friday. We are about three months short of completion, to issue a call, if all goes smoothly, by the time Father John's interim period ends in February. The applicant pool reflects great diversity in terms of the age, length and type of experience, geographical location, background, and expressed interests of the candidates.  Applicants' compensation requirements -- for stipend, housing, pension, and insurance -- while described as negotiable, right now for the most part exceeds what St. John's can afford, a challenge that adds real concreteness and urgency to our approach to stewardship going into 2016.

Next steps for the committee: 1. Conduct in-depth reviews of all application materials; 2. Committee members make anonymous visits to parishes; 3. Matches are invited to visit St. John's for in-depth interviews; 4. Search committee provides a recommendation to vestry; 5. Vestry issues a call. The Bishop interviews the final candidate by telephone, and prayerfully concurs with the decision.
Please continue to keep the committee in prayer during this time.

Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life. - Proverbs 16:31.

Aging is a journey we are all undertaking, and we are blessed to live in a time when we are likely to see a ripe, old age.  The most successful journeys begin with a plan.  Do you have a plan?  Do your parents and other loved ones?  Join us, every Sunday in October at 9:00 a.m. for the Adult Forum "Planning Your Path" series on aging. "What is a Village and Why Do I Need One?"; "Staying in your Home Forever"; "Say What?  Why Ignoring your Hearing Can Contribute to Dementia"; and "Mind, Mood & Memory" presented by Roberta Feldhausen  for ALL ADULT AGES.
