February 2014

Houmas House Plantation and Gardens

Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice.

Valentine's Day is only a week away! Last year consumers spent $18.6 billion dollars on Valentine paraphernalia. That's billions of dollars in flowers, candy and cards that will ultimately be thrown away or quickly consumed and forgotten.  There's a better way to spend your money for Valentine's Day this year. Why not celebrate with a memorable experience that will last for years to come?

With the addition of our new Inn at Houmas House, a romantic evening doesn't have to end after champagne and delectable desserts at Latil's Landing.  We invite you to spice it up with a stay in a luxurious room just walking distance from the historic mansion.  Our new Inn boasts lavish rooms with old world furnishings, spa-like bathrooms, private porches, and incredible views of the surrounding gardens.  This year could mark the best Valentine's Day ever!

Dinner reservations can be made by calling 225-473-9380.

Spreading the Love

As Seen by Princess Grace

In all my years of being the Princess of the Sugar Palace,  I have seen many expressions of love throughout the mansion and gardens. From proposals to weddings to anniversary parties, each one reminds me how wonderful it is to be in love.

I remember my wedding day so well.  It was quite a grand affair.  I hosted two thousand guests, media from across the country, and close friends and family from New Orleans. Getting married at Houmas House was positively the most magical moment of my life.

This Valentine's Day I will miss my late husband, King Sam, more than ever.    But I will relive my favorite day with each wedding I watch from my private royal chambers.

In honor of our wedding, we'll have a special Valentine's Day menu just for you.  I would recommend making reservations soon.  So many couples spend the most romantic time of year with us.  I can't blame them.  I did.

How will you celebrate Valentine's Day this year? I want to hear your story.

Love,

Princess Grace

Signature Entrees from Latil's Landing Restaurant

Red Velvet Bread Pudding
  Serves 12

Red Velvet Cake:

2 cups sugar

1/2 pound (2 sticks) butter, at room temperature

2 eggs

2 tablespoons cocoa powder

2 ounces red food coloring

2 1/2 cups cake flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 cup buttermilk

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 tablespoon vinegar

Bread Pudding Mix:

3 cups half-and-half

3 large eggs

1 large egg yolk

Pinch salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature

3/4 cup confectioners' sugar

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease 9 by 13 by 2-inch sheet pan.

In a mixing bowl, cream the sugar and butter, beat until light and fluffy. Add the eggs 1 at a time and mix well after each addition. Mix cocoa and food coloring together and then add to sugar mixture; mix well. Sift together flour and salt. Add flour mixture to the creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Blend in vanilla.

In a small bowl, combine baking soda and vinegar and add to mixture. Pour batter into the prepared sheet pan. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove from heat and cool completely. When the cake is cooled, cut into 1-inch cubes.

Place cubes onto 11 by 17-inch cookie sheet. Place in oven for 10 minutes.

Bread Pudding Mix:

Combine the half-and-half, eggs, egg yolk, salt, and vanilla in a medium bowl. With an electric hand mixer in a large bowl, beat the cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Mix in the half-and-half mixture.

Place the red velvet cubes in a large baking dish or 8 individual ramekins. Add the pudding mixture to the dish. Make sure the cake cubes are completely covered. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until the pudding is set.
