“Managing Money and Finances”

About this session:

For individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and those who support them, preparing for adulthood involves decisions that affect every aspect of life. This second workshop in a series of seven on preparing for adulthood with ASD will address how to prepare for the financial needs and responsibilities of adult life: personal finance and money management; insurance, Medicaid, and provate and public supports. The workshop will begin with an overview of financial structures and options, folllowed by two small breakout sessions: one for young adults with ASD and one for parents and caregivers.

Presenters  and Facilitators will include: 

Susan Tachau - Chief Executive Officer, Pennsylvania Asssistive Technology Foundation
Susan Tachau leads PATF, a statewide non-profit organization that provides no-interest and low-interest loans to people with disabilities and their families to purchase assistive technology devices. Ms. Tachau was one of the editors of PATF's ˘ents and $ensibility, a Guide to Money Management - the first comprehensive financial education booklet in the country for people with disabilities and their families. Ms. Tachau serves on numerous boards and advisory committees and is parent to an adult son with cerebral palsy who lives independently in the community.

Ira M. Fingles, Esq. - Attorney, Hinkle, Fingles & Prior
Ira Fingles has devoted his legal career to the representation of individuals with disabilities and their families, including benefits and services for adults with disabilities, guardianship, and estate planning. His motivation to enter this field stemmed from his experiences with his sister, who has multiple disabilities. He has argued precedent-setting cases in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, has written extensively on topics related to disabilitiy law and has presented to disability groups across the nation. Ira is Immediate Past President of the Autism Society of America - Greater Philadelphia Chapter, and is a member of the Penn Autism Network Advisory Committee.

Pat Bergmaier, CFP (R), ChSNC (TM) - 1847Financial
Pat Bergmaier is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER (TM) and a Chartered Special Needs Consultant (TM). These designations have provided Pat with the knowledge and expertise to address the unique circumstances and requirements of planning for families that have dependents with special needs, the core focus of his practice. Special Needs Planning addresses the key areas of planning for a dependent with special needs: protecting and maximizing government benefits, creating the correct estate planning framework, and analyzing funding strategies t provide for lifetime care and quality of life in the most tax-efficient manner possible.

Families:        $10.00 per session
(up to 4, including  $50.00 for all 7 sessions

* CEU credits in Psychology, Social Work, and Act 48 are pending board approval & may incur an additional $5 per session.
