TEXT CHAPTER 4: THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL
II. Right Teaching and Right Learning

15 The ego tries to exploit all situations into forms of praise for itself in order to overcome its doubts. It will be doubtful forever, or rather as long as you believe in it. You who made it cannot trust it because you know it is not real. The only sane solution is not to try to change reality, which is indeed a fearful attempt, but to see it as it is. You are part of reality, which stands unchanged beyond the reach of your ego but within easy reach of your Soul. When you are afraid, be still and know that God is real and you are His beloved Son in whom He is well pleased. Do not let your ego dispute this because the ego cannot know what is as far beyond its reach as you are.

GUIDANCE from ELDER BROTHER>

1Your holiness reverses all the laws of the world. It is beyond every restriction of time, space, distance, and limits of any kind. Your holiness is totally unlimited in its power because it establishes you as a Son of God, at one with the Mind of his Creator. Through your holiness, the power of God is made manifest. Through your holiness the power of God is made available. And there is nothing the power of God cannot do.

2Your holiness, then, can remove all pain, can end all sorrow, and can solve all problems. It can do so in connection with yourself and with anyone else. It is equal in its power to help anyone because it is equal in its power to save anyone. If you are holy, so is everything God created. You are holy because all things He created are holy. And all things He created are holy because you are.

3In today's exercises, we will apply the power of your holiness to all problems, difficulties, or suffering in any form that you happen to think of in yourself or someone else. We will make no distinctions because there are no distinctions.

4In the four longer practice periods, each preferably to last a full five minutes, repeat the idea for today, close your eyes, and then search your mind for any sense of loss or unhappiness of any kind as you see it. Try to make as little distinction as possible between a situation that is difficult for you and one that is difficult for someone else. Identify the situation specifically and also the name of the person concerned. Use this form in applying the idea for today:

5In the situation involving ______ in which I see myself, there is nothing that my holiness cannot do. In the situation involving ______ in which _____ sees himself, there is nothing my holiness cannot do.

6From time to time you may want to vary this procedure and add some relevant thoughts of your own. You might like, for example, to include thoughts such as:

7There is nothing my holiness cannot do because the power of God lies in it

8Introduce whatever variations appeal to you, but keep the exercises focused on the theme, There is nothing my holiness cannot do. The purpose of today's exercises is to begin to instill in you a sense that you have dominion over all things because of what you are.

9In the frequent shorter applications, apply the idea in its original form unless a specific problem concerning you or someone else arises or comes to mind. In that event, use the more specific form of application.

ORIGINAL HAND SCRIPT

1 A theoretical foundation such as the text is necessary as a background to make these exercises meaningful. Yet it is the exercises which will make the goal possible. An untrained mind can accomplish nothing. It is the purpose of these exercises to train the mind to think along the lines which the course sets forth.

2 The exercises are very simple. They do not require more than a few minutes, and it does not matter where or when you do them. They need no preparation. They are numbered, running from 1 to 365. The training period is one year. Do not undertake more than one exercise a day.

3 The purpose of these exercises is to train the mind to a different perception of everything in the world. The workbook is divided into two sections, the first dealing with the undoing of what you see now and the second with the restoration of sight. It is recommended that each exercise be repeated several times a day, preferably in a different place each time and, if possible, in every situation in which you spend any long period of time. The purpose is to train the mind to generalize the lessons, so that you will understand that each of them is as applicable to one situation as it is to another.

4 Unless specified to the contrary, the exercise should be practiced with the eyes open, since the aim is to learn how to see. The only rule that should be followed throughout is to practice the exercises with great specificity. Each one applies to every situation in which you find yourself and to everything you see in it. Each day's exercises are planned around one central idea, the exercises themselves consisting of applying that idea to as many specifics as possible. Be sure that you do not decide that there are some things you see to which the idea for the day is inapplicable. The aim of the exercises will always be to increase the application of the idea to everything. This will not require effort. Only be sure that you make no exceptions in applying the idea.

5 Some of the ideas you will find hard to believe, and others will seem quite startling. It does not matter. You are merely asked to apply them to what you see. You are not asked to judge them, nor even to believe them. You are asked only to use them. It is their use which will give them meaning to you, and show you they are true. Remember only this-you need not believe them, you need not accept them, and you need not welcome them. Some of them you may actively resist. None of this will matter nor decrease their efficacy. But allow yourself to make no exceptions in applying the ideas the exercises contain. Whatever your reactions to the ideas may be, use them. Nothing more than this is required.

 LESSON 38

There is nothing my holiness cannot do.

The purpose of today's exercises is to begin to instill in us a sense that we have dominion over all things because of what we are as a Son of God, at one with the Mind of the Creator. (5.5)  Does this kind of power seem arrogant to you? Our belief in our littleness is, in fact, what arrogance really is. In Chapter 9.VIII Grandeur Versus Grandiosity, Jesus says that "to accept yourself as God created you cannot be arrogance, because it is the denial of arrogance. To accept littleness is arrogant, because it means that you believe your evaluation of yourself is truer than God's." (T.9.VIII.10.8)   So when we accept our littleness, we think we know better than God. We defend our littleness, our belief in powerlessness. Why would we do that? Because we are actually afraid of the power of our own minds. If we maintain our smallness, then we don't have to take responsibility for our lives, our circumstances or our situation. Nor do we have to take responsibility for our biggest fear which is that we have left God by our own volition and can never return to face Him. It was our choice to leave and now it must be by our decision that this initial choice be undone. As we read in "The Decision for God," "I must have decided wrongly, because I am not at peace. I made the decision myself, but I can also decide otherwise."  (T.5.VII.6.7-8) And we continue to decide wrongly every time we choose the ego because with this choice we will not have peace. But when we choose to forgive, the Holy Spirit will lead us back to where we never left.

Let's look at the ego more fully. What are some of the characteristics of the ego?  The ego compares, wants, strives, demands, feels guilty, wants specialness, needs, is acquisitive, feels inadequate, unworthy, narcissistic, predatory, dualistic, hateful, angry, sensory, proud, arrogant, resentful, feels lack, powerless and much more. It is constantly talking so that if we decide to sit quietly, it will tend to disturb that quiet place with its chatter. The basic thing is that the ego is all about getting for itself to fill our sense of lack. Yet what is lacking is our awareness of our holiness. The truth is that we are not the ego and nothing is lacking in who we are as the Christ. The 'you' that the Jesus is addressing this to, is the awareness that is always there that is listening to the ego voice but separate from it.

When we identify with the ego, we feel this lack greatly and so we try to fill it up with things in the world. The ego's most boasted gift in filling up our void is the special relationship. In our special relationships we look to steal the love that we think we are lacking and in doing so we become predatory and competitive. I see you as having something that I want or having power over me. But I can only see in this way if I am identifying with the ego. A first step in distancing from the problems that I perceive with the ego is to become aware of it. To do so is to look at it honestly. The one that is doing the looking is the 'you' that is not the ego. Jesus is explaining to us how the ego operates but he is constantly reminding us that it is not who we are. The more that we learn to honestly notice how we react to people and events in our lives, and simply look at our egos without judgment, the more we will heal. When we resist the ego, or we try to fight it, then we make it real rather than just withdrawing belief from it or refusing to listen to its lies. If we can look at it calmly, without judgment and guilt, then we will start to see how it operates in our lives. We have come to identify with it as if it is who we are. Yet, the only truth is that we have never left God and are still his One Son.

So again, it is all about staying vigilant about our thoughts and perceptions. Recognize that our identity as a unique and separate self is not who we are. It is not helpful to take a position on the ego like "I love it" or "I hate it."  Our only interest should be to transcend it by forgiving ourselves for our mistaken perceptions. And we are essentially wrong about everything we perceive. The reason is that our assessments of everything in our lives are given us by the ego. For example it will tell us that we should be jealous, envious, upset or disturbed about a situation that we are experiencing. But we don't have to listen. We can turn to the Holy Spirit and ask Him how we could perceive the situation from a right minded perspective. The ego made our senses to prove that what we are perceiving is true. So now we are being called to watch our thoughts and recognize that the ego is invested in having us see others as the cause of our problems rather than for us to see that our minds are the cause. Nothing outside of us can disturb our peace unless we give it the power to do so.

In  T. 6.IV. "The Only Answer", we are told that the ego always speaks first. It is capricious and does not mean its maker well. It believes, and correctly, that its maker may withdraw  support from it at any moment. As Jesus says, we make illusion as a result of our guilt but do not see ourselves as the maker, nor that the mind is the cause. We see the cause outside and separate from our own minds. (T.27.VII.7) But we don't have to listen to the ego's interpretation of events. While the first interpretation is always the one that the ego shows us, it will always be wrong. And when we realize that, we will turn to the truth within and choose to have our misperceptions healed. Jesus reminds us that if we are holy then so is everything that God created. Now all problems are solved because we see that we are all the same.

A difficult situation showed up for me as I was writing this commentary. My 98 year old mother has a diaper service but in spite of my request, earlier in the week, it turned out that they were not delivered as expected. When I called them, they indicated that they had encountered a difficulty and since it was the weekend they would not be delivering. This means that I have to go out to pick them up and deliver them myself. I am feeling imposed on as I have many things to attend to since I will be leaving for a week. As I was talking on the phone to the agent, the ego voice was telling me that this should not have happened, that I should be upset etc etc. The temptation was to listen to that voice and to act on it. But being in the middle of this lesson commentary was very helpful to remind myself that no situation need be seen as negative. In the holy instant, there are no problems. I don't need to see this situation as a problem nor make the person on the phone guilty unless I want to reinforce separation. It is always a choice between the ego and the holiness of who we are. Which is it that I want for myself today? Do I want guilt or peace?

Your holiness reverses all the laws of the world.  It is beyond every restriction of time, space, distance and limits of any kind. Your holiness is totally unlimited in its power because it establishes you as a Son of God, at one with the Mind of his Creator. (1.1-3) Thus there is no limitation of time, space, distance and limits of any kind (1.2) and to "all problems, difficulties or suffering in any form..." it is really the same as a miracle. There are no restrictions. The reason that there is nothing our holiness cannot do is that it emanates from our right minds when we connect with the truth of who we are. In this situation, belief in sin, guilt and judgment are gone and we then experience ourselves as eternal beings of light and love. Our holiness can be anywhere at any time with no restrictions because it is beyond time and space. Of course we don't believe it because we have taught ourselves otherwise and what we believe and hold true for ourselves, we will defend. And what we fear we will resist. That is why we need to look at all of our interfering thoughts which block the truth.  The conditioned mind has been programmed so that our responses become automatic based on our conditioning. But when we pay attention to them, we can make another choice.

"There is nothing in the world that has the power to make you ill or sad, or weak or frail. But it is you who have the power to dominate all things you see by merely recognizing what you are." (W-pI.190.5:6)

By choosing to do this work to heal our wrong minded perceptions, we recognize that in our holiness are all things blessed along with us. David Hawkins has said that it is rare to hear the truth but most rare to hear it and pursue it and thus undo the ego. We are fortunate that the Course has found us so that we can hear the truth and indeed that we are willing to do the work to undo the ego. Jesus says that "whether or not you recognize it now, you have agreed to cooperate in the effort to become both harmless and helpful, attributes that must go together." (T.4.II.5)He recognizes that our attitudes are still conflicted because all attitudes are ego-based but assures us that this will not last. "Be patient a while and recognize that the outcome is as certain as God." (T.4.II.5.8)Why can he say this? Our fears and doubts will not last. And we have powerful Help along the way.

When we choose to realize our holiness, and accept the Atonement, (healing)  the power of God is made manifest. By accepting our holiness the power of God is made available and known to us and there is nothing the power of God cannot do. Through my acceptance of and joining with the holiness and power of God's Love there can be no opposite. There can be no illusion of pain, sorrow or problems, because fear and Love cannot co-exist. My holiness envelops everything because my holiness is everything. It is an experience out of time and space so that it is seeing the characters in the dream from above the battleground. This is a holy instant where there is no experience of the body. Here all problems are solved because the only problem is separation. There is no order of difficulty in miracles because all illusions are one. The size, shape or description of the problem is irrelevant. Since the guilt in the mind is the source of all pain, sorrow, and problems of any kind,  then when the guilt is lifted from the mind, the cause of pain must also dissipate and seen to be unreal. The mind is cause and the world is effect.    "This is a course in cause and not effect." (T.21.VII.7)

Today we are being asked to be actively involved in a choice. What is that choice? It is to recognize the holiness that resides in the right mind. And in that recognition, we are joined with the Holy Spirit where holiness is accessed outside of time and space. It is the truth about our nature as we were created by God. Specialness and individuality disappear when we join with the Holy Spirit. Holiness can then shine through and bring blessing.  Jesus invites us to choose our healing in every circumstance that arises so that we can bring His holiness to every situation that we encounter. That is why we are here. Life here becomes the theater for our healing and we realize we are the ones that made up this dream and are not simply the dream figures that are puppets in this theater.  We are immense, powerful beings of light and love because that is how we were created.

In today's exercises, we will apply the power of our holiness, first by accepting it as true through the Holy Spirit, and then by applying it to all problems, difficulties or suffering in any form that crosses our minds, in ourselves or anyone else. It is in our power because we are a Son of God and have His power because we are one with His Mind and all creation.   Open your mind to this potential and possibility so that this thought can become more a part of you. Open your mind sufficiently today to apply it sincerely to a situation, event, person that is troubling you. "In today's exercises, we will apply the power of your holiness to all problems, difficulties or suffering in any form that you happen to think of, in yourself or in someone else." (3.4) Of course, this is because there are no distinctions. (3.5)   The lesson tells us that it makes no difference if it is about us or someone else as there is no difference since we are really One.

Love and blessings, Sarah

Chapter Four

The Root of All Evil

II. Right Teaching and Right Learning
        continued

12 It is natural enough for the ego to try to protect itself once you have made it, but it is not natural for you to want to obey its laws unless you believe in them. The ego cannot make this choice because of the nature of its origin. You can because of the nature of yours. Egos can clash in any situation, but Souls cannot clash at all. If you perceive a teacher as merely a "larger ego," you will be afraid because to enlarge an ego is to increase separation anxiety. I will teach with you and live with you if you will think with me, but my goal will always be to absolve you finally from the need for a teacher.

13 This is the opposite of the ego-oriented teacher's goal. He is concerned with the effect of his ego on other egos and therefore interprets their interaction as a means of ego preservation. I would not be able to devote myself to teaching if I believed this, and you will not be a devoted teacher as long as you maintain it. I am constantly being perceived as a teacher either to be exalted or rejected, but I do not accept either perception for myself.

14 Your worth is not established by your teaching or your learning. Your worth was established by God. As long as you dispute this, everything you do will be fearful, particularly any situation which lends itself to the "superiority-inferiority" fallacy. Teachers must be patient and repeat their lessons until they are learned. I am willing to do this because I have no right to set your learning limits for you. Once again-nothing you do or think or wish or make is necessary to establish your worth. This point is not debatable except in delusions. Your ego is never at stake because God did not create it. Your Soul is never at stake because He did. Any confusion on this point is a delusion and no form of devotion is possible as long as this delusion lasts.

16 God is not the author of fear. You are. You have chosen, therefore, to create unlike Him, and you have made fear for yourselves. You are not at peace because you are not fulfilling your function. God gave you a very lofty responsibility which you are not meeting. You know this, and you are afraid. In fact, your egos have chosen to be afraid instead of meeting it. When you awaken you will not be able to understand this because it is literally incredible. Do not believe the incredible now. Any attempt to increase its believability is merely to postpone the inevitable.

17 The word "inevitable" is fearful to the ego but joyous to the Soul. God is inevitable, and you cannot avoid Him any more that He can avoid you. The ego is afraid of the Soul's joy because, once you have experienced it, you will withdraw all protection from the ego and become totally without the investment in fear. Your investment is great now because fear is a witness to the separation, and your ego rejoices when you witness to it. Leave it behind! Do not listen to it, and do not preserve it. Listen only to God, Who is as incapable of deception as are the Souls He created.

18 Release yourselves and release others. Do not present a false and unworthy picture of yourself to others, and do not accept such a picture of them yourselves. The ego has built a shabby and unsheltering home for you because it cannot build otherwise. Do not try to make this impoverished house stand. Its weakness is your strength. Only God could make a home that is worthy of His creations, who have chosen to leave it empty by their own dispossession. Yet His home will stand forever and is ready for you when you choose to enter it. Of this you can be wholly certain. God is as incapable of creating the perishable as the ego is of making the eternal.

19 Of your egos you can do nothing to save yourselves or others, but of your Souls you can do everything for the salvation of both. Humility is a lesson for the ego, not for the Soul. The Soul is beyond humility because it recognizes its radiance and gladly sheds its light everywhere. The meek shall inherit the earth because their egos are humble, and this gives them better perception. The Kingdom of Heaven is the right of the Soul, whose beauty and dignity are far beyond doubt, beyond perception, and stand forever as the mark of the love of God for His creations, who are wholly worthy of Him and only of Him. Nothing else is sufficiently worthy to be a gift for a creation of God Himself.

20 I will substitute for your ego if you wish but never for your Soul. A father can safely leave a child with an elder brother who has shown himself responsible, but this involves no confusion about the child's origin. The brother can protect the child's body and his ego, which are very closely related, but he does not confuse himself with the father because he does this, although the child may. I can be entrusted with your body and your ego simply because this enables you not to be concerned with them and lets me teach you their unimportance. I could not understand their importance to you if I had not once been tempted to believe in them myself.

21 Let us undertake to learn this lesson together, so we can be free of them together. I need devoted teachers who share my aim of healing the mind. The Soul is far beyond the need of your protection or mine. Remember this:

22 In this world you need not have tribulation
because  I have overcome the world.

23 That is why you should be of good cheer.
