2015 Vision Grants for preeclampsia research announced
The Preeclampsia Foundation has announced that Shannon Bainbridge, PhD, and Richard Burwick, MD, are the recipients of its 2015 Vision Grants. These two $20,000 research grants were recently presented at the 2015 North American Society for the Study of Hypertension in Pregnancy Conference held in Chicago, Illinois. The Foundation also awarded four $500 travel grants to young investigators.
Visions Grants are awarded to the strongest scientific proposals recommended by the Foundation's scientific review committee with a further review by a consumer advisory group. The Foundation's Board of Directors renders the final decision on those recommendations.

New study: The Rising Burden of Preeclampsia in the United States Impacts Both Maternal and Child Health
A study recently published in the American Journal of Perinatology reports a dramatic increase in the incidence of preeclampsia in the United States as well as its economic burden on families. Preeclampsia and early-onset preeclampsia have grown 67 percent and 143 percent (4,000 more pregnancies), respectively, over the past two decades.
"This paper is well done," said James Martin, MD, past president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and member of the Foundation's Medical Advisory Board. "While it draws on data from other sources -- and not individual patient quality-controlled data sets -- it's excellent for concept and overview of implications."
One of the top six causes of maternal mortality in the United States, preeclampsia is associated with infant death and potentially lifelong complications for the mother and newborn, according to the study.
The dramatic rise in this life-threatening condition outpaces that of some of the United States' most challenging public health concerns, including diabetes, obesity, and Alzheimer's disease.
