Bugle Calls
Issue No. 1012
May 2014
Bob Bugle-B-1001

In February's edition of "Bugle Calls" we introduced or reacquainted readers with Dr. Stephen Covey, author of a number of acclaimed books, including the international best seller, "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People".

Our main topic for February's issue was, appropriately enough, Habit 1 "Be Proactive". "As human beings we are responsible for our own lives. Our behavior is a function of our decisions, not our conditions."

In May's edition of "Bugle Calls", we'll focus on Habit 2 "Begin with the End in Mind". Understanding who we are and where we want to go is critical to our success, both personally and professionally.

"To Begin with the End in Mind means to start with a clear understanding of your destination. It means to know where you're going so that you can better understand where you are now and so that the steps you take are always in the right direction" Dr. Stephen Covey.

Habit 2- Begin with the End in Mind

-
"7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Dr. Stephen R. Covey
Analysis by Bob Bugle

Bob Bugle-B-1001 Dr. Covey defines a habit as the intersection of knowledge (what to do), skill (how to do it) and desire (wanting to do it). Unless all three elements are involved, a good habit will never be formed.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind.

"All things are created twice. There's a mental creation and a second or physical creation"

We are all familiar with the concept of visualization. The concept is very popular in athletics. Coaches and sports psychologists encourage athletes to see themselves accomplishing a goal before the event itself is set to take place. A basketball player visualizes making the shot before the ball leaves his hands. The professional quarterback who, as a child, visualizes throwing the winning touchdown pass in some future Super Bowl. Swimmers during endless hours of practice, continue to imagine themselves standing on the medal podium at some future Olympics.

So, what do you want to be when you grow up? That question may appear a little trite, but think about it for a moment. Are you--right now--who you want to be, what you dreamed you'd be, doing what you always wanted to do? Be honest. Sometimes people find themselves achieving victories that are empty--successes that have come at the expense of things that were far more valuable to them. If your ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step you take gets you to the wrong place faster.

I'm once again honored to have been invited to present. The title of the presentation is "Diocesan Publication Websites and the New Evangelization".

Over the past 15 months I've researched every diocesan publication in the United States which accepts advertising, and have created a database of diocesan publication websites which (a) accept advertising, (b) can quantify web traffic (# impressions and # unique visitors per month), and (c) can provide proof of performance (# Impressions and # clicks delivered) to advertisers.

We'll discuss the importance of having a robust website, tied to diocesan publications, as a critical tool in communicating with active Catholics, former Catholics, individuals practicing other faiths, and the growing number of adults in America who are practicing no faith at all.

We'll review some ideas for building traffic to the sites, and cover various pricing models to generate incremental ad revenue on a local and national basis to help fund the initiative.

I look forward to seeing you and as many folks in Charlotte as possible, and hope you can attend. Please consider sharing this with a friend or associate.

Warm regards,

Bob Bugle
