Hepatitis B Project in Action

This fiscal year, AAHI is partnering with three community organizations for the hepatitis B project: the Chinese Culture and Community Service Center's (CCACC) Screening, Treatment, Outreach, and Prevention of Hepatitis B (STOP B); the Korean Community Service Center's (KCSC) Active Care and Treatment of Hepatitis B (ACT Hep B); and the Viet Nam Medical Assistance Program's (VNMAP) Screening, Management, Awareness, and Solutions for Hepatitis B (SMASH-B).

We recently hosted our Results Day and Vaccination #1 events. Participants who previously attended the hepatitis B educational lecture and screening events returned to consult with a physician about their screening results. If needed, participants had the opportunity to get the first shot of the three-dose hepatitis B vaccine at no cost. The events were a great success! We would like to thank the partners, volunteers, medical team, and staff for all of their hard work and dedication towards the project.

Through the hepatitis B project, over 350 community members were served and over 120 doses of hepatitis B vaccine were given. Community members who received the first dose of hepatitis B vaccine will receive the second and third shots for free in the upcoming months.

To learn more about our past hepatitis B efforts with community partners, please visit AAHI's Publications page. For upcoming hepatitis B events, please check our calendar.

National Minority Health Month Proclamation to LIEED Advisory Committee

During April, the federal government recognizes National Minority Health Month by raising awareness of the health disparities that continue to affect racial and ethnic minorities. This year's theme, Prevention is Power: Taking Action for Health Equity, emphasizes the critical role of prevention in reducing health disparities (Office of Minority Health).

In July 2013, AAHI, as a part of the Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), worked closely with DHHS leadership and community leaders to co-create the Leadership Institute for Equity and Elimination of Disparities (LIEED). LIEED addresses the social determinants of health with the goal of eliminating disparities and achieving equity among Montgomery County residents. It strives to make systematic changes to increase positive health outcomes. As the demographics of Montgomery County change, one of LIEED's  priorities is to identify and recruit diverse communities to serve on its Advisory Committee. On April 29, 2014, the Montgomery County Council presented a proclamation to the LIEED Advisory Committee to recognize the collective effort from County organizations and individuals to reduce health disparities.

Sincerely,

AAHI Staff
