Effective  November 1, 2015, Mrs. Lu Jiang will become San Marino Unified School District's first Community Liaison Officer. The Board of Education received input from parents and community members about ways to improve communication  among the District and parent constituencies. Thanks to the leadership of Superintendent Alex Cherniss and S chool  Board Clerk C. Joseph Chang, the new Community Liaison Officer position, approved at last night's Board of Education meeting, will provide another avenue of outreach and communication within the San Marino community. School Board Clerk, C. Joseph Chang said "We are delighted to have Lu Jiang join our team of professionals.  This is a tremendous opportunity for the District to increase communication, including the Asian community."

Superintendent Cherniss introduced Mrs. Lu Jiang to the Board during last night's public meeting. "The Community Liaison Officer is a dedicated resource committed to providing valuable information, opportunities, solutions and a greater sense of connectedness between the District and families who are new to our community," said Dr. Alex Cherniss, Ed.D.

The Board is very pleased that Mrs. Lu Jiang has agreed to serve as the Community Liaison Officer for the District.  In her former position, Lu consistently demonstrated excellent communication and interpreting skills, and her friendly demeanor and extensive knowledge about the District will serve her well in this important position.

Board President, Lisa Link said "It is important for all families to feel welcome and connected to the SMUSD community.  Through the new Community Liaison Officer position, students and parents will have greater awareness of educational and extracurricular opportunities within the District, which may lead to increased participation and success both inside and outside of the classroom."

The Community Liaison Officer coordinates District-wide services and provides orientation and support for parents of families with school-aged children who are new residents.  Additionally, the Community Liaison Officer will provide oral and written translations and distribute written translations for publications, forms, announcements, press releases and instructions.  She will attend PTA and other school-connected organization meetings and community events.
