Dear Friends:

Thank you to everyone who helped create the wonderful celebration of Pentecost and summer kick-off BBQ last Sunday. A special thank you to St. John's men's group for grilling up a great lunch. If Pentecost is the birthday of the church then Sunday felt like a community that knows how to throw a birthday party. Below is a picture of us enacting the tongues of fire resting on the disciples heads that occurred at the first Pentecost and which was described in the reading from Acts.

The celebration continues on June 15th with Trinity Sunday, which is always celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. On this Sunday in particular we celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity, one God in three persons or expressions. The oneness of the three persons of the Trinity is the ultimate expression of unity. Rectors are notorious for assigning associate clergy or seminarians to preach and so avoid having to "explain" the trinity. Somehow I managed to schedule myself to preach at 8am and 10am, although I think the real point is not to explain the trinity but to encounter our triune God.

God's Peace,

Chris Rankin-Williams

Rector

Dinner Church: Every Tuesday at 6pm

Every Tuesday we gather in our parish hall for a meal and to share small-group conversations that deepen our spiritual lives. This is an all-ages event and we are done by 8pm. Please RSVP if you plan to attend -- it helps us know how much food to prepare. We're also making plans to continue this ministry over the summer while Fr. Steve is on sabbatical. Please email  Virginia if you think you'd like to be part of the team that helps coordinate and lead Dinner Church over the Summer.

UTO Contributions

Thank you for your contributions to UTO (United Thank Offering). Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout the Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world.  St. John's has received donations in the amount of $725.00 as our combined offering this year to support UTO. If you have questions, please contact Mary Jane Chetelat.

Today is the feast of Ephrem of Edessa, a deacon in the Syrian Church who was called the "Harp of the Holy Spirit" for the beautiful hymns he wrote. Ephrem wrote hymns for a choir of women to help teach the faith to those who heard the choir sing. Ephrem worked tirelessly during a famine to feed and care for the poor and sick. He died of exhaustion from his efforts in 373.

Writing about the Passion of Christ, Ephrem wrote: "No one has seen or shall see the things which you have seen. The Lord himself has become the altar, priest, and bread, and the chalice of salvation. He alone suffices for all, yet none suffices for him. He is the Altar and Lamb, victim and sacrifice, priest as well as food."

The collect for Ephrem of Edessa:

Pour out upon us, O Lord, that same Spirit by which your deacon Ephrem rejoiced to proclaim in sacred song the mysteries of faith; and so gladden our hearts that we,
