Ahhh, the fall Red table. Come visit.

Dear Reader,
14 years ago today was a Saturday. Laurel Book Store on MacArthur Blvd. opened after 4 days of anxiety over the events in New York on the 11th. We had had some brief discussions about whether or not to open the store, and if we did, would anyone even come? I picked up what I could on dealing with grief and trauma from a distributor and we made a table display. I've never regretted opening that weekend and I'm always grateful for those who made the store happen. Especially that incredibly difficult week.
Come in this week and wish us a happy anniversary! 14 years of serving readers has been a privilege!
We will celebrate for real on October 24, the opening day of the current store. Next year, perhaps a month-long celebration for 15 years!
And on with the books already!!

Happy reading,
Luan

Sweet Caress by William Boyd $28 When Amory Clay was born, in the decade before the Great War, her disappointed father gave her an androgynous name and announced the birth of a son. But this daughter was not one to let others define her; Amory became a woman who accepted no limits to what that could mean, and, from the time she picked up her first camera, one who would record her own version of events.
Moving freely between London and New York, between photojournalism and fashion photography, and between the men who love her on complicated terms, Amory establishes her reputation as a risk taker and a passionate life traveler. Her hunger for experience draws her to the decadence of Weimar Berlin and the violence of London's blackshirt riots, to the Rhineland with Allied troops and into the political tangle of war-torn Vietnam. In her ambitious career, the seminal moments of the 20th century will become the unforgettable moments of her own biography, as well.

The Lives of Others by Neel Mukherjee $15.95 The aging patriarch and matriarch of the Ghosh family preside over their large household, made up of their five adult children and their respective children, unaware that beneath the barely ruffled surface of their lives the sands are shifting. Each set of family members occupies a floor of the home, in accordance to their standing within the family. Poisonous rivalries between sisters-in-law, destructive secrets, and the implosion of the family business threaten to unravel bonds of kinship as social unrest brews in greater Indian society.

Rywka's Diary $35 The newly discovered diary of a Polish teenager in the Lodz ghetto during World War II-originally published by Jewish Family & Children's Services of San Francisco, now available in a revised, illustrated, and beautifully designed trade edition.
After more than seventy years in obscurity, the diary of a teenage girl during the Holocaust has been revealed for the first time.Rywka's Diary is at once an astonishing historical document and a moving tribute to the many ordinary people whose lives were forever altered by the Holocaust. At its heart, it is the diary of a girl named Rywka Lipszyc who detailed the brutal conditions that Jews in the Lodz ghetto, the second largest in Poland, endured under the Nazis: poverty, hunger and malnutrition, religious oppression, and, in Rywka's case, the death of her parents and siblings.

In this magnificent reimagining of the form he originated, two stand-alone stories-the first in nearly 400 pages of continuous pictures, the second in prose-create a beguiling narrative puzzle. The journey begins on a ship at sea in 1766, with a boy named Billy Marvel. After surviving a shipwreck, he finds work in a London theatre. There, his family flourishes for generations as brilliant actors until 1900, when young Leontes Marvel is banished from the stage. Nearly a century later, Joseph Jervis runs away from school and seeks refuge with an uncle in London. Albert Nightingale's strange, beautiful house, with its mysterious portraits and ghostly presences, captivates Joseph and leads him on a search for clues about the house, his family, and the past.
