Dear Friends of Naturopathic Medicine;

Many of you have asked about my trip to Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic! It was inspirational in so many ways. Let me count the ways:

1. I was able to relax, and fully live in the present moment and really enjoy the time with my family (wife and two adult sons). I do admit to answering patient emails while away, though!
2. I love the ocean, especially swimming and body surfing in huge waves. The ocean temp in Puerto Rico was 83 degrees! My Raynaud's Disease (a medical condition that causes very cold, numb fingers during cold temperatures) was definitely not a factor. My sons and I were swimming for two to three hours at a time in the absolutely gorgeous ocean water. It was wonderful!
3. My sons and I had a chance to have very extended conversations about the deepest and most meaningful things in life.
4. Never before did my wife, two sons, and I ever dance so much - as we did in Dominican Republic as we  were attending a wedding. I saw both sons put on moves that I have never seen before! It was so wonderful to see my kids having so much fun dancing.
5. My sons and I talked extensively about running, fitness and nutrition. I came back committed to working out more, muscle-wise, and lowering my body fat by December 6 for  California International Marathon . Please see my challenge below.

Dr. Godby's Challenge - Start the Fall Inspired!

Are you ready for the Dr. Godby Fat Loss Challenge? Let me explain! I will be running my first marathon since the 1980s (NO, I'm not asking you to run). I am running the 26.2 miles CIM (California International Marathon) on Sunday, December 6, 2015. I know that my marathon time will be at least an hour slower than when I was in my 20s, not just because I am 30 years older, and haven't been running much since my 2011 injury, but because the rest of my body is much less fit (less muscle, more fat) than when I was in my 20s. I also know that I could run much faster if I reduce my current 20.4% body fat to 16.4%, or less. So, this is my goal by Thanksgiving. Besides running, I need to do extensive strengthening and stretching exercises.

Here's where you fit in: I would like to encourage you - if you feel you would be healthier if you lost some fat - to accept my challenge and get a test done here at the clinic, ASAP, called a BIA ( Body Impedance Analysis - covering percent fat and many other fitness factors). Here's the deal to inspire you - if you reduce your body fat percentage by 4% or more, between now and any time before Thanksgiving, your Second BIA will be FREE. If not, you would pay the full price of $45. To encourage you to get started, if you accept the challenge, your first BIA (or any other BIAs you may elect to do before the finale) will be reduced from $45 to $25. Also, any nutritional supplements that you purchase - intended for fat loss, will be discounted 20% instead of the normal 10%. Just tell the staff you are part of the Dr. Godby Challenge. Instead of waiting until the new year to get healthier, why not show up to your holiday festivities feeling great and already in momentum.

Also, I received a message from Dietitian Meghan O'Hara, RD/Health Coach that works out of our office. To assist in this Fat Loss Challenge, Meghan is offering a deal for people interested in the Hc3 Trim Program and fat loss. Usually her initial consultation is 90 min ($125) and follow ups are 60 min ($85) or $210 total, but she is offering a $25 discount, so both the initial consultation and follow up would be only $185.

Please call 916-446-2591 or email: [email protected] if you would like to join the Challenge fun! To contact Meghan directly, her number is: 916-800-2115.

Update on California Naturopathic Pending Legislation

I received the following update from our the CNDA state office this last week about our legislation that many of you were involved in - Thank you!

"Despite the almost superhuman efforts of our lobbyists and the core legislation team and many of you helping out in district meetings, SB 538 failed to get the votes needed to pass out of the Assembly Appropriations Committee last week. We were able to successfully make it through four of the seven steps needed to get the bill signed into law, more than our opponents expected. However, with fewer other bills to oppose and heavy lobbying power, CMA (California Medical Association and the other medical groups, such as Kaiser Permanente) were able to stall our bill - for now.

The good news is that this is not finished, just postponed. We will be able to restart the process again next year at the same point in the bill's journey.

We will keep you posted on the timing of things but look out for requests for support this fall as we start to lay the groundwork for the next session. We want to be sure to thank everyone who donated money, sent letters, made calls, took meetings with legislators and staff, and came to Sacramento for lobby day or to testify in hearings.

We couldn't have done it without you. Next year, we will need all of that energy AND MORE to get the bill passed.

The work of the legislative committee will continue this year. Please DO donate to support the ongoing campaign, DO respond if someone from the CNDA calls or emails you.

Thank you!
Your CNDA Legislative Team

My sister, Mary Rita Godby Ely (in purple), three time ovarian cancer survivor since she was first diagnosed 9 years ago, and her daughter, Tessa Ely (in green), as they climb Mt. Alyeska in Alaska last weekend to raise awareness of "cancers below the belt." Please check out the website so you can be, "down there, aware." BTW, the ovarian cancer blood test marker that diagnosed my sister with ovarian cancer was the CA125. She uses that test routinely, along with others, to check her status. There is a mere 17% survival rate for ovarian cancer - Mary Rita's incredible resilient attitude, along with naturopathic and conventional medical care - have contributed to her current status of being cancer-free.

Ironically, I will be speaking at this conference at the exact same time as the incredibly inspirational, Dr. Thomas O'Bryan, DC, who I consider to be the world's most important gluten authority and is, undoubtedly, one of the best speakers I have ever heard!

If you are seeking optimal health, the good news is that it is easier and less complicated than you may think. Below are the "no-brainer" things that you must know.

Dr. Dennis Godby, ND & Dietitian Meghan O'Hara, RD
It could be about life and death. As gluten free breads, cakes, snacks and menus are becoming more popular, many people are asking, "What's all the fuss??"

Letting nature heal, and curing the whole planet           Meghan O'Hara, RD and Dr. Dennis Godby, NMD                  These six principles are founded on medical tradition and scientific evidence and used by naturopathic doctors to diagnose and treat patients.

    • Meghan O'Hara, RD and Dr. Dennis Godby, ND, MA

Spring Cleaning for Your LifeDr. Dennis Godby, ND
  • Spring is the perfect season to open the doors and windows of our homes and do a thorough "spring cleaning." It is also a great time to "air out" the houses of our body and mind

  • Live a healthy life by choice, not chanceMeghan O'Hara, RD and Dr. Dennis Godby, ND
In contemplating this month's column near the March 17 celebration date, we thought of the word 'luck,' and that getting and staying healthy is anything but luck.

  • How to Get the Love You WantMeghan O'Hara, RD and Dr. Dennis Godby, ND
While Valentine's Day is a special day on the 365 day calendar to celebrate love, romance and treat the other significant people in our lives with extra kindness and intimacy.

  • Healthy Weight Loss in the New Year Dr. Dennis Godby, ND, and Meghan O'Hara, RD
As health care providers, we fully recognize that excess weight leads to higher rates of diabetes, heart disease, stroke and other serious health conditions. But we're equally aware of the tragic consequences of a nation striving to look like supermodels, unable to accept their own unique bodies.

  • Anti-Inflammatory NutritionDr. Dennis Godby, ND
The secret to quelling the fire - Could you use the gift of health this holiday season? You can transform your health and energy in as little as two weeks by adhering to the "anti-inflammatory nutritional plan."

  • Arm yourself for Swine Flu and Winter IllnessDr. Dennis Godby, ND
Many are conflicted - to get the H1N1 (Swine Flu) shot or not.Regardless of what you decide for you and your family members, everyone would be wise to work at preventing the flu. Your best defense against the virus or any other infection is to strengthen your immune system

  • Male Menopause and the Female Hormone ProgesteroneDr. Dennis Godby, ND
Perhaps you are among the tens of millions of men in this country who are on the slippery slope of losing vitality, will admit, at least to yourself, that you are going downhill, and in the process are losing some of your enthusiasm for life as you age.

  • Andropause - Male MenopauseDr. Dennis Godby, ND
  • Are you among the millions of men who are losing vitality as you age - also called andropause (the male version of menopause) - the lowering of "androgen

  • California threatens naturopathic careDr. Dennis Godby, ND
Most California healthcare consumers are probably unaware that Governor Schwarzenegger is recommending the elimination of the Naturopathic Licensing Bureau, which licenses naturopathic doctors

  • Has your doctor told you, "your blood test results are completely normal," but instead of feeling relief, you felt worse, knowing that something was wrong, but the doctor was unable to find any answers?

  • Insomnia, Sleep On It and Feel RefreshedDr Dennis Godby, ND
A sleep study showed that 47% of adults and 57% of children in the U.S. do not sleep enough. The American daily average is now only 6 hours and 40 minutes, and still declining, far off the adult-recommended 8 hours, and far below the 9 hours that Americans used to sleep

  • Starting a New Exercise Program, not a LuxuryDr. Dennis Godby, ND
When my patients use their age to justify their declining health and energy, I just say "Jack LaLanne, still going strong at almost 95 years young," to encourage them to set their sights on preventing disease, and to strive for feeling healthy, energetic, strong and vital. Regular, vigorous exercise is a requirement for this to occur!

  • Build Muscle: Burn More FatDr. Dennis Godby, ND
While you can't change a slow metabolic genetic predisposition, you can still burn fat more efficiently, add more muscle, and get and stay healthy.

  • Food Allergies - What You Don't Know Can Hurt YouDr. Dennis Godby, ND
Naturopathic medical doctors often see themselves as "medical detectives." One of the six powerful principles of naturopathic medical doctors is to identify and treat the underlying causes of illness and to help patients remove the obstacles to cure, rather than merely treating symptoms

  • Heal yourself and the planetDr. Dennis Godby, ND
Pessimism and despair lead to diseased individuals and to a diseased planet. Despite the inescapable bad news, the Jan. 20 inauguration of the 44th U.S. president has given many Americans a new reason for optimism and hope

  • Attitude impacts well-beingDr. Dennis Godby, ND
As we embark upon another holiday season, and difficult economic times, we may want to "go back to the drawing board," and decide what is really important in our lives, relationships and health!

  • Vitamin D levels drop as winter's gloom nearsDr. Dennis Godby, ND
If living a long and healthy life is a priority, it is imperative to know that simply having a low level of Vitamin D is associated with an amazing 26 percent increased rate of death, from all causes, according to an August, 2008 Archives of Internal Medicine study.

  • Nutritional Supplements QualityDr. Dennis Godby, ND
The most expensive dietary supplement you can take is the one that does not work, or even worse, may even cause harm!

  • Children's health in the new school yearDr. Dennis Godby, ND
One thing I know for certain - parenting is tough, very tough. I am reminded of that fact, daily, not just by having two teenage sons myself, but also hearing the many gut-wrenching stories of the concerned parents who enter my office looking for answers for their children's health.

The celiac disease (CD)/gluten intolerance (GI) good news is that this condition is 100% curable

  • Celiac Disease and a Gluten Free DietDr. Dennis Godby, ND
I have to admit, despite a thorough naturopathic medical education, I didn't take celiac disease (CD) seriously enough

  • Adrenal fatigue, perfectionism and your healthDr. Dennis Godby, ND
The drive to succeed can lead down a wrong path. Pursuing excellence is admired, encouraged and rewarded by our society

Despite material abundance and technological success, or perhaps because of it, statistics show that our children are part of one of the unhealthiest generations in world history.

  • Exercise is the Key to Vitality, Overcoming DepressionDr. Dennis Godby, ND
Chemicals secreted by the brain contribute to what endurance exercise enthusiasts call "runner's high." Even though the physical benefits of exercise are enormous, the mental clarity, vitality, and improvement in perceived quality of life is what keeps people motivated to exercise, day after day.

  • Although there is rarely just one cause, a poor diet often makes a significant contribution to depression. A deficiency of any single nutrient can alter brain function and lead to depression, anxiety and other mental disorders.

  • Depression a Widespread Source of SufferingDr. Dennis Godby, ND
Depression significantly impacts the lives for at least 10% of the U.S. population

  • Type 2 diabetes (T2D), now epidemic in the United States, is a national tragedy, as 1 in 3 Americans - born in the 21st century - are expected to become diabetic, even young children.
