Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture to match contributions made by member organizations and individuals

Commodity Groups, County and Regional Federations, and individual Farm Members are invited to contribute to a new endowment fund for Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture students.

Bible Hill, NS - The Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture is fundraising to establish a new endowment for Nova Scotia students studying at Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture.

Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture is asking members to contribute to the organization's efforts of increasing scholarship support for Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture undergraduate students.  All funds raised through these efforts will be matched by the Federation, up to $12,500.  Qualifying individuals and organizations will be able to receive a charitable tax receipt for their contributions to the fund.

"Member organizations and individuals have expressed an interest in supporting the challenge put forward by the Federation," said Nova Scotia Federation of Agriculture President, Chris van den Heuvel. "A sustainable agriculture industry requires a skilled next generation.  Financially supporting the students who attend the regional agriculture university is a suiting approach to ensure a thriving and advancing industry."

It is important that the Federation maintains their relationship with Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture.

"Dalhousie Faculty of Agriculture has a strong technical and academic focus which supports the Agriculture Industry in Nova Scotia," said van den Heuvel.

Anybody interested in contributing to the endowment fund can do so by contacting the NSFA office at [email protected] or (902) 893-2293.

PC's Introduce Food Donation Tax Credit Bill
Allan MacMaster, MLA for Inverness, presented a Bill to have a tax credit for farmers donations to food banks.  An article in the Kings North News issued by John Lohr, MLA, said that Ontario already has this legislation.  Produce that is too large or small, or misshapen is simply left in the field.  Sometimes crops are left in the fields because weather hasn't been in the harvesting season's favour or the market just isn't there.  A tax credit for donation would help cover the cost of handling the produce and provide some incentive to the farm to see this product gets to the food bank.
