He joins the University of Maryland from Colorado State University, where he most recently served as dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences.
The College of AGNR will host stakeholders and friends at three different locations throughout the state to meet Dean Beyrouty. The first location will be on the University of Maryland's College Park campus on December 1st from 3:00 until 5:30 pm at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center. Please RSVP to
[email protected] with your name and the date/location you will attend.

Dean Beyrouty succeeds Dr. Cheng-i Wei, who served as dean of the College of AGNR for ten years before stepping into a new role as director of the college's international programs office. Extension staff enjoyed working with Dr. Wei over the years and will miss his passion for agriculture, commitment to students and faculty, and his smiling face.
Thank you, Dr. Wei. We wish you well in your new role!

MD Ag Commission Tours Prince George's County Farms
The
Maryland Agricultural Commission kicked off its fall 2015 tour at
Miller Farms in Clinton on the crisp autumn morning of October 14. The advisors to the Secretary of Agriculture, and the Commission gather for farm tours in two counties each spring and fall to learn more about the issues and policies affecting agriculture in those counties. This year's fall tour focused on farms in both Prince George's and Charles counties.
After consuming a breakfast of champions, including the bakery's signature homemade donuts and both apple and pumpkin ice cream, the Commission hopped on a wagon and toured this 200 year old farm's brassica fields adorned with clever scarecrows, a pick-your-own kale section and corn maze. The 30 member commission and the Maryland Department of Agriculture Secretary, Joe Bartenfelder, also enjoyed the farm store stocked with local goodies and colorful mums before heading to three diverse operations in Charles County.

Did you know... Country Vittles from Critter Hill Farm has turkeys on sale at the Farmers Market at Maryland. Turkeys can be ordered on Wednesdays at the market, via email or by phone. Check out the flyer for more information!
Did you know... It is time for Producers to start their Nutrient Management Plans. Plans need to be completed and in producers hands prior to nutrient applications. Producers need to check their soil test results and make sure they are current. Soil samples need to be taken every three years. If you are planning on liming this fall you should take your samples before you lime to get an accurate pH result. It takes 6-12 months for lime to react in the soil and raise the pH. This is also a good time to make sure all the maps are up to date for your plan. When you have current soil tests, maps and know what the planned crops are for the 2016 growing season then give Chris Dowell is in the Prince George's county office on Mondays and Tuesdays to assist with your nutrient management plans, send him an email at
[email protected] or call him at
301-868-8783 for more information.
Carrot Apple Soup Recipe
The apple in this simple, scrumptious soup will make the sweet carrots and onions even sweeter. These are all fall/winter ingredients-which makes this the perfect fall or winter lunch.
Kitchen Gear: Cutting board Sharp Knife Measuring spoons Pot with cover Slotted spoon Measuring cup Blender or food processer (adult needed)
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon olive or canola oil
1 medium onion, peeled and chopped
2 pounds carrots, peeled and sliced
1 apple, peeled (if you like), cored and chopped
8 cups chicken or vegetable stock
1/2 cup Greek or plain low-fat yogurt
(if you want to make it "creamy")
Did you know...You can prevent soil from escaping through the holes in the base of flowerpots by lining with large coffee filters. As we enter the Winter months, this tip will help with indoor plants and seed starting.
This Thanksgiving, we are especially thank you for our subscribers and we hope you have a wonderful holiday!
