Shabbat Shalom
From Rav Tomer Ronen
In this week's parsha, Toldot, we read the well-known story of Yaakov and Rivka's deception of Yitzchak in order to ensure that his bracha, intended for his oldest son, Esav, would go to Yaakov instead. While this is a troubling episode that raises many questions, the midrash explains that after Yitzchak realized that he had given the bracha to the "wrong" son, he also recognized that Yaakov was indeed the right choice as the next link in the chain of Am Yisrael. How did he know this? By the
difference in the ways that Yaakov and Esav each brought him the food he had requested and asked for the same bracha.

A close reading of these parallel psukim (27:19 and 27: 31) shows that Yaakov used extra words to convey a different level of caring and concern for his father and a much more delicate way of approaching him and asking for the bracha. When I shared this insight with our students this morning, I asked them what we can learn from here to apply to our own lives? In addition to the importance of honoring our parents, we also see clearly that the way we speak to people is important. The same exact message can be conveyed in very different ways, with very different results, depending on the words we choose to use and our manner in delivering them. It is this attribute of Yaakov, that we, as Am Yisrael (a name deriving from Yaakov himself - whose other name was Yisrael) should strive to uphold, and to model for our children and all those with whom we interact.

Shabbat Shalom,
Rav Tomer Ronen
Rosh HaYeshiva
Kristallnacht
On the 77th anniversary of " Kristallnacht ," the night of broken glass, BPY junior high school students watched a short PBS film discussed their reactions, and shared new information they learned from the video. In our eighth grade class, this led to a conversation about the responsibilities of a government to its citizens during times of crisis and a comparison of the US government's response in the aftermath of the Civil War vs. the German government's response in the aftermath of World War I. Sixth graders explored a primary source from 1930s Germany - a personal memoir from Mr. Kahn's wife's grandfather - and saw pictures of the events and places he describes.

Veterans Day
Have you thanked a veteran recently? BPY students observed Veterans Day by learning about the five branches of the US armed forces and discussing the importance of thanking and recognizing those who serve. With guidance from the  Major Stuart Adam Wolfer Institute , BPY junior high students discussed that many veterans make significant sacrifices to serve our country and how important it is to recognize them and thank them. They crafted beautiful thank you letters that were delivered to veterans this week.

Click here to watch this moving video that we shared with our junior high students showing the value of proactively seeking out veterans to thank them for their service.

4th Grade Girls Bake Sale to Benefit Magen David Adom
We are so proud of our fourth grade girls who planned and executed an incredible bake sale where they raised over $1200 for Magen David Adom! The girls were extra thrilled that their customers included Rav Ronen, Morah Jessica, and many other BPY teachers and friends!  Kol hakavod!

Living Legacy Havdallah Program
On Thursday, first and second graders participated in the Living Legacy Havdallah Program. They discussed how Shabbat is like a queen, a special guest whom we welcome into our homes each week. Just as we take the time to prepare special foods to welcome Shabbat, we mark its conclusion with a special havdallah candle. Then, the children made their own beautiful havdallah candles to use at home. Todah rabbah to Living Legacy for this beautiful program.

BPY partners with Living Legacy to bring a number of special, hands-on events to school throughout the year. If you would like to sponsor an interactive Living Legacy program at BPY, please contact BPY's Director of Development, Rachel Weiss (x35, [email protected]).

Fall Artwork in Toddler

Waste-to-Energy in Second Grade
Second graders burned garbage and made enough energy to raise water temperature by 77 degrees - just like some of our BPY garbage which goes to waste-to-energy incineration plants!

Modeh Ani in Third Grade
As part of their tefillah curriculum, third graders examined "Modeh Ani" in depth and thought about their own stories of gratitude. In Hebrew, each student wrote about something s/he is thankful for, drew a picture related to that theme, and then shared with the class. A great lesson for all of us and a beautiful way to develop additional kavanah and connection to Hashem through our tefillot! Check out this video to see some of their work:

North vs. South in Eighth Grade
BPY eighth graders researched different Civil War era figures and then adopted their personas to engage in a period debate about the "future" of the union. What a great way to understand and experience our country's history!
