QUESTIONS WITH MARTHA MADSEN,

Who doesn't want to travel the world, discover dramatic landscapes and unique wildlife, experience local cultures and food? DO I NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE?

Photo: Yakutia Airlines
  • We recommend you first check the insurance policies you already have to see what they will cover. Some health insurance policies will cover medical emergencies overseas. Many homeowner's policies cover baggage loss. Also, some credit card companies offer coverage of baggage loss and international medical assistance for their members.
  • For travel medical insurance, consider purchasing supplementary insurance. Take into account your age, your health, your existing coverage and your love for high-risk activities.
  • When shopping for medical insurance, you may want to explore comprehensive policies that include non-health related things such as trip cancellation or trip interruption.
  • Do your own homework and don't solely rely on a tour company. What they may present to you, may not be necessarily what you need for your situation and budget.
