Summer Volunteer Opportunity with One Heart Source
One Heart Source (OHS) is an entrepreneurial non-profit organization that designs and catalyzes education programs that empower vulnerable people and communities with choice and opportunity.  The organization's model of international mentorship connects university students to vulnerable youth and communities across cultural, social, and economic boundaries. Boulder Country Zero Waste Internship
The Boulder County Resource Conservation Division is seeking a Zero Waste Intern to support projects related to Boulder County's goal of reaching zero waste or "darn near" by 2025.  This internship will provide an introduction to a career in sustainability with opportunities to network and build skills in research, communication, and project management.  It will also provide an opportunity to learn how government works towards achieving community goals.  Application by December 15.

Grassroots Campaigns is also hiring undergraduates to work on their campaigns as Field Managers.  These jobs are a great way to get involved on the campaign and have a huge impact before you graduate.  Grassroots Campaigns hire students to work part time during the school year, and will consider applicants who want to work on campaigns next summer as well.
Students for a New American Politics (SNAP) PAC Fellowship
SNAP is the nation's largest and most impactful student run PAC.  SNAP works to open the doors to the world of electoral campaigns for passionate, young Americans - regardless of background - and ensure that our politics are as diverse as our nation.  SNAP fellows receive intensive training, then work for 10 to 12 weeks in the summer months - with an optional extension to November - as full-time field organizers.  The SNAP Fellowship is a paid grassroots organizing fellowship for students and youth that's fast-paced, high-impact, and focused on social justice values. 
Environmental Protection Agency Lab Internships
The intern will assist aquatic biologists conducting environmental field investigations of aquatic ecosystems. Investigations may involve work in different environments to include lakes, mountains, streams, wetlands, industrial facilities, as well as in a laboratory.

ENVS 4100-001/005 Special Topics in ENVS: Conservation Ethics
Instructor:  Alex Lee
Section 001: MW, 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m.
Section 005: MW, 4:30 p.m. - 5:45 p.m.
This course will explore contemporary ethical questions concerning nature conservation, restoration, and preservation.  It will use applied ethics to cover such topics as Climate Change, Intervention Ecology, Novel Ecosystems Management, the Anthropocene, and Rewilding, exploring questions of environmental value, ontology, and obligation.  Full course description available here (bottom of page).

ENVS 4100-003/004 Special Topics in ENVS: The Marine and the Maritime (new course title)
Instructor:  Atreyee Bhattacharya
Section 003: TTH, 4:00 - 5:15 p.m.

This course will explore the 75% environment: the oceanic environment, the threats to this massive environment and global ocean policies. Topics will include coral reefs, sea ice stability, ocean acidification, polar oceans, the deep-ocean, oceanic gyres, marine biodiversity, trash in the oceans etc. Full course description available here (bottom of page).

ENVS 4100-006 Special Topics in ENVS: Desertification of Arid Lands
Instructor:  Atreyee Bhattacharya

This course will develop in-depth understanding of how regional and global climate impacts the environment of arid regions.  We will explore the link between environment and climate using both modern (e.g. California drought, the Sahel Drought) as well as historical (e.g. Medieval droughts of Europe, collapse of the Maya civilization) case studies.  Full course description available here (bottom of page).

ENVS 4800-001 Critical Thinking in Environmental Studies:  Human-Environmental Interactions in Sub-Saharan Africa

Many of the important issues facing Africans today are the consequences of human modifications of the physical landscape.  This course investigates the inter-relationship between humans and their natural or physical environments in Sub-Saharan Africa, a place of extraordinarily diverse, vibrant, and dynamic human cultures and environments.  Full course description available here (bottom of the page).

ENVS 4800-002 Critical Thinking in Environmental Studies:  Deforestation and Food
Instructor:  Peter Newton

Cocoa, sugar, palm oil, beef, coffee, and soy are a daily part of the diets of millions of people globally.  Yet large-scale production of these commodities in the tropics is frequently associated with high rates of deforestation, soaring greenhouse gas emissions, and significant social inequality.  In response, an increasing number of NGOs, government agencies, and private sector organizations are trying to improve the sustainability of commodity production.  Full course description available here (bottom of the page).

ENVS 4800-003 Critical Thinking in Environmental Studies:  Resilience and Healthy Cities
Instructor:  Jill Litt

This course will build on the World Health Organization's Healthy Cities and social determinants of health frameworks to understand cultural, social and ecological domains of everyday environments that shape population health and incorporate this knowledge into cultural and sustainability planning processes.  Students will partner with the City of Boulder's Office of Arts and Culture to conceptualize and evaluate challenges facing neighborhoods; use a range of methods to elicit knowledge about these places; and inform how cities and municipalities build resilience to contemporary social, economic, and environmental challenges through arts and culture.  Full course description available here (bottom of the page).

ENVS 4800-004 Critical Thinking in Environmental Studies:  Futures for Boulder Open Space

The seminar is an interdisciplinary critical thinking seminar intended for students interested in exploring open space and land management issues/problems/futures facing Colorado's Front Range.  We will be exploring a range of interdisciplinary topics, including but not limited to: community participatory planning and action research; ecological and social carrying capacity; future growth scenarios / alternative futures modeling; histories of open space planning; recreationist/preservationist debates; urban-boundary wildland systems and growth management.  Full course description available here (bottom of the page).

ENVS 4800-005 Critical Thinking in Environmental Studies: Sustainable Communities

Neighborhoods and districts are an important scale for the organization of sustainable systems because they are at the center of daily life.  This class explores issues, opportunities and methods for engaging residents in neighborhood scale sustainability planning such as green infrastructure, building resilience or long-term affordable energy.  Full course description available here (bottom of the page).

ENVD 4363 Designing with Schools: Sustainable Design Practice
Instructor:  Tori Derr
MW, 10:00-11:30 a.m. 
This interdisciplinary course will investigate aspects of sustainable school design including food and energy systems, adaptive reuse and resourced materials, and participatory planning and design. The students enrolled in this course will have opportunities to explore their individual areas of interest in greater depth and to share their passions and expertise with middle school children through collaborative design activities. The course content areas will be woven into a cohesive, hands-on design process in collaboration with the students, faculty, and staff at Casey Middle School in the Boulder Valley School District. Through this course students will experience design processes "in the real world" as they put theory into action with the creation and delivery of participatory design activities at Casey Middle School.

The Certificate in Global Environmental Affairs is offered jointly by the Program in International Affairs (IAFS) and the Program in Environmental Studies (ENVS).  The certificate links and develops knowledge of global environmental policies and practices.
Certificate in Renewable and Sustainable Energy (RSE)
CU-Boulder's undergraduate energy certificate program provides broad exposure to energy issues, with an emphasis on renewable and sustainable energy.

Submit Nominations for the Thomas Jefferson Award
The CU Office of Academic Affairs is soliciting nominations for the 2016 Thomas Jefferson Award.  Nominees should be members of the teaching faculty, the student body, or staff whose achievements reflect superior performance in their normal work or scholarship and notable participation in humanitarian activities.  The Thomas Jefferson Award is one of the University's highest honors, and includes an engraved plaque and a $2,000 cash honorarium for each recipient.  
The nomination deadline is 5:00 p.m. on December 4.
  For fairness and consistency, the nomination packet is limited to 22 pages (including nomination cover letter) and must include the following:
*    a strong nomination cover letter addressing how the nominee meets the award criteria, especially service performed outside of the normal course of the nominee's duties;
*    nominee's current résumé
*    at least three letters of support.
