THIS WEEKEND:
LAMOTH Lisa Jura Young Pianist Showcase Recital
Sunday, November 15, 2:00-4:00 pm

Please join us this Sunday at 2:00 pm for the LAMOTH Lisa Jura Young Pianist Showcase Recital . E leven talented teenage pianists from across the Los Angeles area will play pieces featured in The Children of Willesden Lane by Mona Golabek, the true story of the escape by her mother, Jewish musical prodigy Lisa Jura , from Nazi-controlled Austria to England on the famed Kindertransport. The students, who were selected  for their talent, advocacy and commitment to Holocaust commemoration, will perform on the historic Blüthner piano in LAMOTH's Holocaust and Music exhibit, which before the Holocaust belonged to a Jewish musician in Germany named Alfred Sendrey.

The event also will feature the premiere of the animated short film "Tipping Scales," which tells the story of Lisa Jura's escape from Austria and her development into a concert pianist. The film was created by students at LAMOTH's Righteous Conversations Project Digital Storytelling Workshop this past summer.

Developed in partnership with the
Hold On To Your Music Foundation and its founder, author, recording artist, radio host and concert pianist Mona Golabek, the Young Pianist Showcase gives talented young pianists the unique opportunity to learn about and advance the mission of Holocaust education and commemoration through their passion for music.

Seating is limited and RSVP to [email protected] is required. For more information about the Young Pianist Showcase, click here.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Righteous Conversations | Virginia Avenue Project Production
November 20-22, Miles Playhouse, Santa Monica

Please join us next weekend for "Reading Through," a performance of original theater and film created by Santa Monica High School students and inspired by the lives of Holocaust Survivors. In collaboration with the nonprofit Virginia Avenue Project, the Righteous Conversations Project brought a six-week workshop to Santa Monica High School this fall.
Students had the opportunity to learn from the narratives of four Holocaust Survivors in our community, Eva Brettler, Betty Cohen, Harry Davids, and Michele Rodri. The Survivors met with students in small groups, enabling students to learn first-hand about their experiences during the Holocaust and to reflect with students in the context of their own lives. The class also came for a visit and customized tour of the LAMOTH galleries, which provided the unique opportunity for students to learn from primary sources about the history of the Survivor mentors. The students then created plays and films based on the life stories of the Survivor mentors, which will premiere next weekend, with professional actors performing the plays.

SPOTLIGHT:
Bnai Mitzvah Student Raising Funds for L'Dough V'Dough

For her Bat Mitzvah Tzedakah project, Ava  Freeman is raising funds to purchase challah-baking equipment for LAMOTH's L'Dough V'Dough project. A passionate baker who has appreciated learning the life stories of Holocaust Survivors, Ava wanted to provide opportunities for others in the community to participate in L'Dough V'Dough, in which participants and Holocaust Survivors share personal narratives as they braid and bake challah.

If you would like to support Ava's efforts by purchasing fresh-baked challah for Shabbat or by donating to her project, please contact us at [email protected].
THE WEEK IN REFLECTION:
L'Dough V'Dough at BBYO Global Shabbat

Last Friday, L'Dough V'Dough at LAMOTH traveled to Camp Alonim at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute in Simi Valley for BBYO's Global Shabbat event, this year with the theme "A Shabbat to Remember." Holocaust survivors and teens braided and baked challah together and shared Shabbat dinner, while learning about each other's personal experiences and life stories -- creating a connection from one generation to the next. Many Survivors had tears in their eyes during a ceremony to induct them into BBYO.

Survivor Phil Raucher shared with LAMOTH Executive Director Samara Hutman, "I never thought something like this would ever happen." Hutman led the teen-survivor panel, where the topic was, "What is your relation to the Holocaust, and what brought you to the program tonight?" "For some survivors, it is their first realization that the teens' experience was never part of their own childhood, as rugged survival was their only priority," Hutman said. "We are so grateful to be able to facilitate these opportunities for our community."

THE WEEK IN REFLECTION:
ADL National Youth Leadership Mission Visits LAMOTH

This week we welcomed the Los Angeles delegation from ADL's National Youth Leadership Mission. The students visited the Museum to learn about the Holocaust in preparation for their trip to Washington, DC. After touring the Museum's galleries with LAMOTH Director of Educational Programs Jordanna Gessler, the students heard from Holocaust survivor Gabriella Karin about her experiences during the war. The ADL program helps students apply the important lessons of the Holocaust to modern-day issues of anti-Semitism, bigotry, and hate. Each year a diverse group of high school juniors from across the country is selected to participate because of their leadership potential, demonstrated interest in addressing issues of diversity, and ability to impart the messages of the Mission to others.
The Righteous Conversations Project is made possible through generous support from the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles, the Righteous Persons Foundation, The Erwin Rautenberg Foundation, and The Michael & Irene Ross Endowment Fund of the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles.
