UAB Collaborations Result in Two Major Grants
Working across campus and inter-institutionally to form
successful research collaborations

Congratulations are in order for two major grants recently received by UAB research teams:

A grant from the US Department of Defense, titled, " Surviving Blood Loss: First in Human Study to Assess Safety of Synthetic Ethinylestradiol-3-Sulfate in Healthy Subjects, and Safety and Efficacy in Patients Following Trauma-Associated Hemorrhagic Injury" was awarded to primary investigator  Mansoor Saleh, MD, Professor of Medicine Director, UAB Phase I Program
Medical Director, UAB Clinical Trials Office, and his team.

In 2006, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) launched an initiative to find a therapy capable of preserving life after battlefield blood loss sufficient to cause fatality in the absence of fluid resuscitation. This was established as the Surviving Blood Loss (SBL) program. The need to have an effective intervention to enhance survival after trauma-associated hemorrhagic injury is pressing. The proposed study will take us to a new level of effective therapeutics in such situations at home and abroad.  The investigative team has established that estradiol is an effective pharmaceutical for treating severe hemorrhage and sepsis. Among its effects are preservation of cardiovascular function, blood flow, and energetics, as well as cytoprotection. Based on these and complementary studies, the UAB team has devised a development plan to address clinical efficacy and safety as well as provide evidence as an effective survival-prolonging drug in the absence of fluid resuscitation.

And, a grant to establish the  National Resource Center for High-Impact Clinical Trials in Medical Rehabilitation was awarded to principle investigator  Marcas Bamman, PhD, Professor of Cell, Developmental and Integrative Biology and Director, UAB Center for Exercise Medicine, and his team.

The scientific capacity and intellectual resources assembled through the National Resource Center for High-Impact Clinical Trials in Medical Rehabilitation are critically important to enable innovative and methodologically rigorous clinical trials in rehabilitation medicine, especially pertaining to neurologic and musculoskeletal challenges. The Center will bolster high-impact clinical trials nationally by providing medical rehabilitation researchers with access to specialized expertise, outreach methodologies, a national pilot program, an extensive menu of core facilities and interdisciplinary research centers, and comprehensive study design and support services.  It will provide effective consultative services and collaborative arrangements by aiding medical rehabilitation researchers in all aspects of clinical trial design and conduct through remote videoconferencing, on-site training programs, and hands-on experiences.  It will also provide, develop, and validate state-of-the-art techniques and tools that will enable more rigorous trials yielding higher quality data with direct influence on clinical practice and health care delivery.

Congratulations to both research teams and we look forward to reporting on the efforts of each as the work moves ahead.

This is Research: Faculty Symposium
The Auburn University Hotel & Dixon Conference Center

This is Research Symposia bring researchers and creative scholars together in celebration of their discoveries and innovations. Whether the research is based in arts, sciences, and professional programs, or in developing solutions to meet the needs of society, research is a central component of Auburn University's mission. Each year we hold two symposia - one focused on student research and the other on faculty research.

The Student Symposium is held each spring semester to celebrate the accomplishments of undergraduate and graduate student research from all colleges and schools of Auburn University and Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM).  Students compete for presentation awards, and current faculty and students, as well as prospective students and employers, have a chance to engage in dialogue with student researchers about their work.

The Faculty Symposium is held each fall semester in order to connect researchers and creative scholars across disciplines, helping initiate synergies that advance scholarship at Auburn.  The faculty symposium also raises visibility of research at Auburn University and AUM by engaging and informing a diverse internal and external audience.  Beginning in 2016, we will hold a biennial Creative Scholarship Showcase that features the work of creative scholars across diverse disciplines and methods.

UAB Research Orientation Program - a NEW RESEARCH TRAINING OPPORTUNITY for Faculty, Coordinators, Budget & Regulatory Staff

New to the UAB platform of education offerings for research is a program designed for young investigators and research staff who are new to research (possibly within the first 2 months of starting in research).

The program will be a basic review of how to implement a sponsored- or investigator-initiated study including clinical, regulatory and financial aspects. The intent of this program is to provide a basic overview of implementing a study, familiarize attendees with the language, and hopefully provide guidance on avoiding pitfalls when starting out.  This is not an all-encompassing program, but will provide basic tools and some of the necessary language in order to successfully conduct a research study.

We encourage new faculty, coordinators, budget and regulatory staff to attend.
At this time there is no cost for the program.   Click here for more information.

Fourth Thursday of each month 8am - 12noon in PCAMS (1924 7th Avenue S.).

Registration is limited, so please REGISTER early by contacting   Dharti Patel :  Dpatel80@uab.edu.

This workshop will provide research staff (study coordinators, billing staff, regulatory coordinators, etc.) with the basics of implementing and managing a clinical trial with emphasis on good clinical practices (GCPs), research compliance, and other key topics. It is recommended for people who are starting out in research careers or those who would like to receive updates on the various UAB departments and programs that are on campus.  The program is provided on the UAB campus twice a year, as well as online.

 Register Now!
This seven week course will take place Tuesdays on:  October 6, 13, 20, 27 and November 3, 10, 17.  View a PDF of the agenda here.
