Danilo Perez: Panama 500 (Piano)

“CD Release Party” Featuring Ben Street, Adam Cruz, Roman Diaz and Alex Hargreaves

On the 500th anniversary of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa's discovery of the Pacific, Danilo Pérez and his band will play a night of music inspired by the world's largest ocean. The piece combines traditional folkloric, jazz and classical elements with creative improvisation. Says Pérez, “It’s about the Pacific Ocean talking to me in a dream, telling me the story of the ocean as a holder of the secrets of the ages.” Pérez, who first came to international attention as a member of Dizzy Gillespie's band, has been an acclaimed bandleader for two decades, fusing his Central American musical upbringing with the influences of Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and other jazz masters.

Marion Meadows (Sax/Smooth Funk)

Saxophonist Marion Meadows is hiding something. Like a deft sleight-of-hand artist, there’s always something up his sleeve – something he’s not showing you outright – that ultimately reveals itself when the music starts. Somewhere in those mysterious spaces between the notes – at the convergence of melody, harmony and rhythm – the simple treasures and universal truths are laid bare for those whose ears and minds and hearts are open to discover them.

Todd MArcusMonday, February 17

Todd Marcus Quartet (Bass Clarinet)

Bass clarinetist and composer Todd Marcus is one of the few jazz artists worldwide to focus exclusively on use of the bass clarinet as a primary soloing instrument. While use of bass clarinet in jazz typically tends to lean heavily towards avant-garde and free-jazz styles, Marcus’ playing presents the instrument with a modern straight-ahead jazz approach. His music swings hard with both fiery and introspective intensity but also maintains a strong lyrical sensibility.
