This will be my last e-newsletter until after the municipal elections on October 27 as our policy does not permit us to send newsletters after June 30 in an election year.  I will continue to keep residents up to date as needed on specific issues by email or direct mail and information will continue to be posted on the Ward 9 website at ward9.ca.

Also as a result of the anti-spam legislation that takes effect on July 1, I am purging email addresses from residents who were previously in Ward 9 but now in Ward 10.  Unless you indicate that you wish to remain on my mailing list, all Ward 10 residents' emails will be deleted from our files.  Click here if you are a Ward 10 resident but wish to remain on my mailing list.

I want to also remind you that the Meadowvale Community Centre has now closed for renovations and will re-open again in Summer 2016.  For information on program locations please click here.  I thank you for your patience during this construction period as we build a new and better centre for our community.  Meadowvale Library will ultimately be moving into the new facility but will remain open at Meadowvale Town Centre for the duration of the renovation time.  You can follow the progress of the construction by clicking here.  Click here to leave your comments about what you remember best about time you have spent at the MCC in the past.

On July 9th at 6:30 pm, Peel Paramedics will be providing Hands On CPR (non certification) training.

Please place your yard waste at the curb on July 8th and every two weeks after that.

Play in the Park starts
July 2 at Lake Aquitaine

Play in the Park starts on July 2 at Lake Aquitaine for children 6-12. This is a free supervised nine week outdoor playground summer program.

The Lake Aquitaine Park program runs from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm from July 2 until Aug. 29th.  There is no registration required at this drop in program where our trained summer park leaders will guide active play through physical activities, crafts, drama, and games.

Lyme Disease

This year will be particularly bad for ticks in Ontario.  The main concern about ticks is Lyme disease which is an illness spread through the bite of infected ticks. It can affect both humans and animals and can, in some cases, be fatal if not treated. Ticks are mainly found low to the ground in shrubs or high grasses although they can be found in treed areas.

Ticks can be picked up indirectly or transported on animals In Ontario. Lyme disease is spread by the black-legged tick, also known as the deer tick. The Region of Peel is monitoring the tick population in Peel annually. 

In Ontario, black-legged ticks are most commonly found in areas along the north shores of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River. Take steps to prevent tick bites and reduce the risk of Lyme disease, by clicking here for more information.

Lyme disease is a reportable disease in Ontario.  As a result, Peel Public Health investigates reported and potential cases of Lyme disease among Peel residents. Please report any cases of Lyme disease by calling 905-799-7700 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.  If you remove a tick and are concerned as to whether it is a Lyme Disease carrier, please report it to Peel Health.  Please click here for more information. 

Make the Switch to Active Switch

I am pleased to announce a new online active lifestyle program called Active Switch.  Designed to encourage active means of commuting, the program lets you track your walking and cycling.

The Active Switch program allows residents to

 set personal goals such as calculate calories burned;reduce greenhouse gas emission and track the number of kilometres travelled from walking and cycling.

Encouraging Youth to Vote

The City is inviting Mississauga youth ages 17-25 to share the reasons why they will vote in the October 27 municipal election.

Using the hash tag #Ivotebecause, contestants can share their reason, post a picture or create a video on social media. The most meaningful and creative reasons could win money towards school.

1st prize is $2000 towards College or University

2nd prize is $1000 towards College or University

3rd prize is $500 toward College or University

Winners will be chosen based on creativity, meaningfulness and social media reach. Entrants may use the hashtags as many times as they wish; however only one submission per person will be judged.  Winners will be judged by a panel and prizes will be awarded in the fall. The contest runs until midnight on Election Day.

2014 Road Resurfacing and Spring Road Maintenance Activities

Rehabilitation of Glen Erin Drive Pedestrian Underpass, South of Aquitaine Ave 

As part of the City of Mississauga's 2014 Capital Budget, we have started work on rehabilitating the Glen Erin Drive Pedestrian Underpass, south of Aquitaine Ave.  Construction is expected to take until October 31, 2014.

There will be an impact to traffic flow but Glen Erin will remain open to traffic at all times during construction.  Please be patient with any delays.

I attended the NIED (National Initiative for Eating Disorders) symposium in Meadowvale on June 17.  It was a very educational evening and I learned a lot about this disease that affects many people of all ages.  For more information click here.

It was a packed event on June 21st when residents came out for a final farewell to the Meadowvale Community Centre.  They enjoyed a fun day of fence mural painting, exhibits, activities for all ages, free barbeque, free popcorn and swim.

This was the last big event at the Community Centre before renovations start this summer.  We will have a great facility once it is completed in 2016 and you can follow the construction by clicking here.

I was so pleased to attend and speak on behalf of Council at the launch of the Mississauga City Youth Council on Saturday June 28th.

The council is made up of elected youth representatives (Councillors) from each ward who will work with each of us on Council to learn about government and the city.  These young people have already achieved so much individually and I look forward to their collective voice on issues.  I will be meeting with Jessica the ward 9 representative this summer and I know we will have a great working relationship.  To learn more about MCYC please click here.   #MiCYC @CYCMississauga
