Ward 9 Councillor's Report June 2014 - Vol 13

Dear Neighbour:

This will be my last e-newsletter until after the municipal elections on October 27 as our policy does not permit us to send newsletters after June 30 in an election year.  I will continue to keep residents up to date as needed on specific issues by email or direct mail and information will continue to be posted on the Ward 9 website at ward9.ca.

Also as a result of the anti-spam legislation that takes effect on July 1, I am purging email addresses from residents who were previously in Ward 9 but now in Ward 10.  Unless you indicate that you wish to remain on my mailing list, all Ward 10 residents' emails will be deleted from our files.  Click here if you are a Ward 10 resident but wish to remain on my mailing list.

The legislation does not apply to elected officials e-newsletters unless there is a commercial aspect to any of the information.  As I may post information from time to time about City recreation programs that have a user fee, I am asking that you indicate to me if you wish to remain on my mailing list.   Click here to do so.

I want to also remind you that the Meadowvale Community Centre has now closed for renovations and will re-open again in Summer 2016.  For information on program locations please click here.  I thank you for your patience during this construction period as we build a new and better centre for our community.  Meadowvale Library will ultimately be moving into the new facility but will remain open at Meadowvale Town Centre for the duration of the renovation time.  You can follow the progress of the construction by clicking here.  Click here to leave your comments about what you remember best about time you have spent at the MCC in the past.

I hope you will all have a safe and wonderful summer.  Please remember that children are out of school and drive carefully through our neighbourhoods.   If you are looking for things to do, visit one of our splash pads at Lake Aquitaine or Quenippenon Park or drop by Celebration Square at City Hall for one for our special summer events including the Canada Day celebration on July 1.

I encourage you to join me and our Peel Paramedics on July 9 at 6:30 at Celebration Square for free Hands On CPR training.  Learning what to do could save a life.  Hash tag us on Twitter at #iheartsavinglives.

As always, my staff and I are here to help you with any City or Regional issues.  Just send me an email to [email protected] or call 905-896-5900.

Have a safe and wonderful summer!

Discharging of Fireworks
I received a number of complaints last month during the Victoria Day weekend about fireworks being set off in local parks.

The discharge of fireworks in a City park is prohibited except when a valid permit has been issued. To report infractions please call City of Mississauga Corporate Security at 905-615-4060

The discharge of fireworks on public streets and road allowances is prohibited.  Peel Regional Police should be contacted for enforcement issues at 905-453-3311.

The discharge of fireworks located on private property is limited to Victoria Day and Canada Day (or the following day if the weather on the actual day makes the discharge of fireworks impractical.) Detonation of fireworks beyond midnight of these days is prohibited.  Residents may file a complaint related to activity on private property, after the fact, through the Citizen Contact Center at 311.

Children and Pets are Precious - Keep them with you, not in your car

It is unsafe to leave children and pets in cars alone, anytime. Call 911 when you see a child alone in a car or a pet in distress.

The City has launched an education program to remind motorists to never leave children alone in a car anytime and to not leave pets in cars in temperatures that could cause risk to the animal.

If you see an animal in a car and not in distress but could be at risk due to extreme weather conditions, call the regular police line: 905-453-3311 and request the attendance of an officer. If the animal is in distress then it is appropriate to use 9-1-1.

Keep your pets safe.  During extreme heat, pets can be in danger of exhaustion or heat stroke and even death when enclosed in a car with closed windows.

Tips/Symptoms for Protecting Pets during Extreme Temperatures

  • During extreme heat alerts, bring pets indoors to prevent putting your pet at risk
  • Heatstroke symptoms: excessive panting, rapid/erratic pulse, salivating, weakness and muscle tremors, vomiting, collapse
  • Limit outdoor activities during extreme weather alerts and watch for discomfort such as paw lifting [heavy panting during hot weather]

For more information on pet safety, visit mississauga.ca/animalservices.

Lyme

Lyme Disease

This year will be particularly bad for ticks in Ontario.  The main concern about ticks is Lyme disease which is an illness spread through the bite of infected ticks. It can affect both humans and animals and can, in some cases, be fatal if not treated. Ticks are mainly found low to the ground in shrubs or high grasses although they can be found in treed areas.

Ticks can be picked up indirectly or transported on animals In Ontario. Lyme disease is spread by the black-legged tick, also known as the deer tick. The Region of Peel is monitoring the tick population in Peel annually.

In Ontario, black-legged ticks are most commonly found in areas along the north shores of Lake Erie, Lake Ontario, and the St. Lawrence River. Take steps to prevent tick bites and reduce the risk of Lyme disease, by clicking here for more information.

Lyme disease is a reportable disease in Ontario.  As a result, Peel Public Health investigates reported and potential cases of Lyme disease among Peel residents. Please report any cases of Lyme disease by calling 905-799-7700 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.  If you remove a tick and are concerned as to whether it is a Lyme Disease carrier, please report it to Peel Health.  Please click here for more information.

Farewell to Principal Walter Matos

It was a sad day at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Elementary School on June 19th as the students held a special assembly to say goodbye to Principal Walter Matos who is moving to a new school after 6 years.

It was a great honour to be invited to join the staff and students to thank Walter for all his work on behalf of the community.

It has been a privilege to know Walter and work with him and although the community is sad to see him go, he has created a very solid foundation at the school that I hope will continue.

The kids put on a great show for him that day and I know he will remember how much the school community cared about him.

Middlebury Public School 20th Anniversary

How exciting to join the parents, staff and students for the 20th anniversary of Middlebury Public School on June 19th.

I remember the school opening and found it hard to believe that it has been 20 years.  Some of the original students are now "friends" on Facebook.  It was a great event with lots of celebrating.
