Dear library patrons and friends,

Excavation for the new library is nearly complete. In partnership with the Edgartown School and Jeff Hoover, we are taking daily snapshots of the construction site. We hope you enjoy this brief video highlighting construction progress thus far. New videos will be uploaded to our facebook page. The FF&E (furniture, fixtures, and equipment) committee will reconvene next week to begin the furniture selection process. We invite your input. Please send any requests, comments, suggestions to [email protected]

Singing in the Rain
May 6: Singing in the Rain
Film Programs
Conclude for Season

The library's spring series of Tuesday evening films has been a popular hit with our patrons -- as have the desserts served before each film begins. The series, entitled Movies About Movies, concludes on May 6 with one of the greatest Hollywood comedies ever made: Singing in the Rain, the 1952 classic directed by Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly.

The Sapphires
The Sapphires
On Tuesday, May 13, we'll present a film from an earlier series entitled The Music Makers. Our original screening of The Sapphires on Jan. 21 was canceled by a blizzard -- remember those? Weather permitting, you'll finally have the chance to enjoy this delightful 2012 film from director Wayne Blair which follows a foursome of young and talented Australian Aboriginal girls from their remote home in the outback to Vietnam in 1968, where they entertain U.S. troops.

May in the Children's Room
Fairy Party in the Children's Room
An April highlight: Fairy Party in the children's room
April was a busy month in our children's room, highlighted by a school vacation week that featured special events every afternoon. More than a dozen girls in fairy costumes showed up on Saturday, April 26, for the library's annual Fairy Party event.

Looking ahead, our children's calendar for May is just as lively:

On Thursday, May 1, join us for a special Mother Goose Day story hour program at 10:30 a.m.

On Friday, May 2, make your own magic flying carpet in our afternoon crafts hour.

This spring's Ready to Read program with Kathleen Farrell holds its last session at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 3.

God's Eye craft project
Cinco de Mayo crafts
From 2 to 4 p.m. on the afternoon of Saturday, May 3, the library celebrates Cinco de Mayo with a family party featuring stories, refreshments, music and a crafts project -- making a "God's Eye" with colorful yarn.

On Friday, May 9, our 3 p.m. crafts program is making picture frames for Mother's Day. We'll repeat that program for anyone who drops in from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 10.

Square Crafts is the program on Friday, May 16, at 3 p.m. What's Square Crafts, you ask? It's whatever you make with all the squares we'll provide.

From 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, our crafts program is making paper flower garlands.
Inkpad art supplies

Fun with stamp and inkpads is the crafts program at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 23.

An Edgartown Library tradition, the Teddy Bear Picnic, will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 24. Bring your favorite stuffed bear or toy for stories and refreshments, rain or shine.

Rainbow Loom crafts are our afternoon activity at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 30.

And on Saturday, May 31, join us in the children's room to make your own egg carton herb garden.
Adult Activities: Book Group Meets May 21
Book discussion group.
The Edgartown Library book group held a lively discussion on April 19 of Hotel Honolulu, by Paul Theroux. Up next on the group's calendar is Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand. The discussion will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, and all are welcome. See us at the library desk to request a copy of the book to read.
Library Youth Group Holds Programs
Egg hunt at the library.
The Edgartown Library youth group held its first public activity in April, an egg hunt that sent happy children scrambling all over the library lawn.

This month the group is planning something the library hasn't tried before -- a movie marathon sleepover for the night of Saturday, May 24, and into the morning of Sunday, May 25. In this program for sixth, seventh and eighth graders, movies will be shown all night long, and edible treats include a pizza supper, midnight sundaes and a breakfast buffet. A $5 donation is requested -- for details and to sign up, visit the library.

Project Seeks to Hire Six Students

The Edgartown Library is seeking six qualified students for paid positions with a new initiative called the Amigos Program, a bilingual language and cultural storytime for preschoolers and their families. The project is designed to build cultural bridges and to teach early literacy through books with English and Brazilian Portuguese speaking Island preschoolers and their families, and to provide leadership and teaching opportunities for high school students.

For this project, co-sponsored by the Friends of the Edgartown Library and the Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard, we are seeking three high school students from grades 9 through 11 who are native English speakers and three who are native Brazilian Portuguese speakers. Applications are available in the guidance office of the MV Regional High School, and at the Edgartown Library. Interviews for these positions will begin in the second week of June.
