Public Assistance Requested Regarding Tower Building FIre
May 15, 2014

On Sunday, May 11, 2014 at 7:48 p.m., the Elgin Fire Department responded to a reported fire at 100 E. Chicago St, the Tower Building. The fire was called in by someone passing by the building who noticed fire in the lobby of the building.

Upon arrival, responding units found front lobby door glass broken out and fire inside an open elevator car in the lobby of the building. Due to the suspicious nature of the broken door, and the probability of the fire spreading up the elevator shaft, the alarm was immediately upgraded to a level 1 box alarm which brought in fire apparatus from seven surrounding communities. The initial attack crew went through the front lobby and brought the fire under control within minutes.

Fire crews immediately checked the remainder of the building for any possible occupants and fire spread, beginning with the floor above the fire and the top floor of the high rise. Smoke spread was found throughout the structure. After searching the entire building for any occupants and fire spread, and determining there were none, a high pressure ventilation truck from Wheeling was used to evacuate any remaining smoke within the building.

Fire Investigators were called to the scene and the fire is under investigation at this time. A board-up service was called out to secure the structure.

The police are asking anyone with any information for this incident to contact the Major Investigation Division at 847-289-2600.  Additionally, individuals can provide anonymous tips or information via the crime line at 847-695-4195 or texting 847411 and including ELGINPD in the beginning of the text, along with the message and/or tip information.
