Back-to-School!

"I had a chance to pick my own school uniforms and my grandmother doesn't have to worry about getting my uniforms for me." J. Hodges 10

Academy Sports + Outdoors partnered with the Sycamore View Unit in outfitting 30 club members with school uniforms, and other back-to-school essentials such as new shoes, socks, backpacks, lunch sacks, and a belt. Equipping youth with the essentials in starting school has been an issue in the Memphis Area. With the support of Academy Sports, the 30 club members who were given the opportunity to participate in this event received a $100 gift card to shop with during the 2015 Back-to-School Event.

What's Cooking at the Juice Plus + Technical Training Center

Local celebrity chef, Christopher Beavers, saved the day for the TTC's new Martin Luther King College Prep High cohort during their first scheduled week of culinary training. Chef Beavers is a private celebrity chef who prepares food for Memphis Grizzlies and other NBA players like Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph, Tony Allen, Paul Gasol, and Rudy Gay. He also provides private catering services for recognizable celebrities like Janet Jackson, Bell Biv DeVoe, Elise Neal, and Traci Braxton.

On August 24th and August 25th TTC's Culinary Director was unable to teach classes. So, without hesitation, in between his morning Shelby County Commissioner's catering event and other multiple evening events, Chef Beavers graciously volunteered his time and talen ts to instruct 18 brand new, eager-to-learn, future chefs. The new culinary students had a blast and said they could NOT wait until the next class. Chef Beavers is extremely humble and truly has a service-oriented heart of gold. He enjoys giving back to the community by empowering youth to reach their full potential. When asked why he finds it important to find time to help youth, Chef Beavers replied, "If someone doesn't take time to invest in our youth, then we have NO future."

Thank you to Chef Christopher Beavers!

New Program Kicks off at Oakhaven..."Teens 'Til Ten"
Teens 'Til Ten at our Oakhaven Club provides a safe place for members 13-18 years of age to go on a fun Friday night!

September is a month of new beginnings... school is back in full swing and our youth are slowly adjusting to the routine.  This opens the door for us as we launch our newest program at our Oakhaven Club for youth 13 -18 years of age.
"Teens 'Til Ten" will allow our teenage members to engage in an extended time frame with a new twist to the regular programming which will include guest speakers, contests, competitions, creative education, and cultural activities. The additional clincher will be that the special schedule has to be something different from the everyday scope of their interactions. Members will have a say in the planning of these events and will have the opportunities to share their own ideas for the Friday night gatherings.
On the 3rd Friday of the month the staff will host a special event that will be devoted to structured content that will teach and inform the group. Gang Specialist T.J. Thomas will be the first guest sharing a message of reclamation and gang resistance.
In addition to the structured activities, teens will have full input in determining some of the program content. On the first "Teens 'Til Ten" night, there was a fun twist playing, "Deal or No Deal." Prizes were awarded and then the rest of the night was devoted to brainstorming for future events!
"Teens 'Til Ten" will be a remarkable program to keep our youth focused and to keep them off of the streets at night. We hope to recruit more and more teens for participation while we await the completion and expansion of the new facility at Oakhaven.
Thank you for your support of the 2015 Boys & Girls Club Tennis Invitational!
This year's Tennis Invitational took place on August 14-15th and was a huge success raising over $179,000 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis! The lifetime total for the tournament is over $1,750,000. Over 200 guests joined us to kick-off the weekend at Lexus of Memphis for the Wimbledon White Bracket Bash! Guests enjoyed taking part in this year's fun new theme and had a number of one-of-a-kind auction items to bid on. The amazing support continued with more than 120 tennis players playing on Saturday, 72 Sponsors and 87 in-kind donors!

Here's just a small view of what was made possible through our Tennis Clinic, hosted by Tennis Memphis, that our Sycamore View Club members were able to experience :

"I really enjoyed the tennis clinic. I learned how to fore hand and back hand. We got a chance to play against the girls. We lost, but I still had a great time playing on a tennis court.  Thank you for teaching me how to play tennis. Awesome fun!"
