One way is to verify that an organization is registered as a 501(c)(3) and up-to-date with IRS reporting, committed to transparency, and has a published mission statement and impact summary. Are you considering donating directly to an animal shelter? Use the Shelter Save Rate Report, created by Michigan Pet Fund Alliance using Michigan Department of Agriculture's annual shelter data, to view the performance of shelters in your area. It is safe to say that the shelters with the highest save rates are using your donations most effectively! In addition to publishing the Save Rate Report and using those results to recognize the top shelters in the state, MPFA's 2013 activities included: - Conducting a Lost Pets Workshop featuring Missing Pet Partnership's Kat Albrecht
- Providing consultation and resources to individuals, shelters, and advocacy groups
- Administering the Michigan Rescue Certification Program, which recognizes rescue groups committed to using best practices and a code of ethics
- Establishing the Judith Middleton Kroon Life Saving Program Fund, which will provide grants to Michigan certified rescue organizations to save sick, injured, and elderly pets from shelters
