ENMU-Ruidoso President and Professor to Give Talks

Thursday, November 7 at noon in Room 103, president of ENMU-Ruidoso, Dr. Clayton Alred will give a presentation on his recent trip to Bolivia as part of the Rotary International and the Virginia-based foundation "Bridges to Prosperity" program. Members of the trip visited four bridge sites that allow people of once-isolated communities access to resources often made inaccessible due to torrential rains and seasonal flooding of usually docile rivers. The one-hour presentation features pictures of areas not ordinarily visited by tourists, including regions inhabited by the Quechua indigenous people.

Closer to home, Dr. Cynthia E. Orozco brings her Hubbard Lecture Series to ENMU-Ruidoso on two dates in November. Thursday, November 21 at noon in Room 105, the history professor and author editor of numerous articles on the Southwest and author of "No Mexicans, Women or Dogs Allowed: The Rise of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement" will talk about the history of Ruidoso. The next day, Friday, November 22 again at noon in Room 105, Dr. Orozco pays homage to the late Dave McGary while speaking about his horse sculpture that stands outside of the Hubbard Museum. Both of Dr. Orozco's lectures are one hour long, and attendees are encouraged to bring sack lunches.

These three talks are free and open to the public.

"What a Healthy Forest Looks Like"

The second presentation in the "Living in the WUI: Forest Health and Fire Safety in the Sacramento Mountains" series will be held at ENMU-Ruidoso in Room 103 November 5 at 6:00 pm. The topic of the presentation is "What a Healthy Forest Looks Like." Frank Silva, Timber Manager, New Mexico State Forestry, Capitan District, will present and mediate the session.

Mr. Silva will employ a historical approach to explain why the forest looks as it does today. Forests are in a constant state of flux and there are many factors that contribute to change. By examining old photos of the area, tree rings, the role and effect of fire and insects and human intervention, lessons as to the extent to which this forest has changed and what individual homeowners can do to preserve their property and to prepare for the possibility of a wildfire may be learned.
