CAWA Participates in the National Performance Warehouse Customer Event
The Association was pleased to participate in the customer event attended by several hundred repair shop and part store owners, managers and employees.  "Any time CAWA can get in front of its members and prospective members in one setting that is optimal for us", commented Rodney Pierini, President & CEO. Larry Pacey and Bob Baptiste were gracious enough to provide CAWA with booth space for the event. If you are having a customer event and would like CAWA to participate, please contact Rodney Pierini at [email protected] or 800.332.2292, ext. 1.
Renewing Your Workers Comp Insurance Soon...Pay Attention and at Least Get a Quote --- Please
Preferred Insurance company is deep discounting workers comp premiums in 2014 for CAWA members. Our advice is to get a quote and see how much you can save in premium dollars this year. It could be as much as 20% ! See the enclosure (view) and contact Glen Dailey our insurance partner of Armstrong & Associates at 800.575.6891 or [email protected].
CAWA Introduces a Legislative Resolution Identifying April as Car Care Aware Month
A primary purpose of the Association is to promote the automotive aftermarket industry including and most particularly its members. We reported earlier that CAWA marshalled a Arizona gubernatorial resolution proclaiming April as Be Car Care Aware month. See the enclosure (view) as we have introduced a legislative resolution doing the same in California. Contact our Director of Government Affairs, Jennifer Zins at [email protected] or 916.871.0603.
Attendees and Exhibitors--- Make Your Hotel Reservations for the 2014 Automotive Aftermarket Products Expo (AAPEX)
Use the AAPEX website, www.aapexshow.com/discountedhotels. AAPEX is set for Tuesday, Nov. 4 through Thursday, Nov. 6, at the Sands Expo Center, in Las Vegas, Nevada. See the enclosure for more details (view).

Potential Consequences to our Industry in Long Beach Port Negotiations
CAWA has made you aware of the potential longshoreman's strike at the Long Beach Port, in the past. As we get closer to negotiations before the their contract expires on July 1, 2014 consider these points:
  • Strike: For every one day of strike the ports will back up from 5-10 days: 2 day strike equals 10-20 days, 3 day strike equals 15-30 days...
  • Slowdowns and Disruptions: Everyone is expecting the union to cause slowdowns, disruptions and by cause of action or threat, added congestion at the port in the lead up to the negotiations. We could see additional problems pop up at sympathetic ports that will compound the issue.
  • Lockout: There was a 10 day lockout that crippled West Coast Ports more than a decade ago. If the unions cause too much disruption at the ports, you can be assured there will be another lockout which, just like a strike, would have a devastating effect on the economy and our industry.
  • Diverting to Alternate Ports: A lot of talk has been made about diverting to Oakland or Vancouver. There is not near enough open capacity at those ports to support everyone that wants to reroute their freight.
  • Port Congestion: We are already seeing port congestion due to many companies ordering heavy in anticipation of the strike. In fact, APL has already announced a port congestion fee of $1000 per 40' and $800 per 20' containers effective May 1. Think of the huge amounts of money and the associated reduction in working capital, being invested in added inventory by companies due to just the threat of a strike!

Thus, if you expect shipments of product to Long Beach, plan accordingly. For questions contact our President & CEO, Rodney Pierini at 800.332.2292 or [email protected].
