The World Affairs Councils of America held the 2014 Academic WorldQuest National Competition at the Georgetown University Hotel and Conference Center this past weekend. The Embassy of the Republic of Singapore hosted a reception on Friday evening. Ambassador Ashok Mirpuri spoke on "Singapore and the United States - Why Asia Matters" and students enjoyed a presentation on the education system in Singapore. Thank you to Ambassador and Mrs. Mirpuri and the Embassy of Singapore for graciously hosting us.
On Saturday, Plano West High School from the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Fort Worth defended their title and took first place. Keystone School from the World Affairs Council of San Antonio finished second. Georgetown Day School from World Affairs Council - Washington, DC took third place in an exciting sudden death tiebreaker round. Congratulations to all!

David M. Lampton is Hyman Professor and Director of SAIS-China and China Studies at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, having also served as Dean of Faculty from 2004-2012. Formerly President of the National Committee on United States-China Relations, he is the author of many books including, The Three Faces of Chinese Power: Might, Money, and Minds (University of California Press, 2008), with prior publications appearing in: Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, The American Political Science Review, The China Quarterly, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and many other venues popular and academic in both the western world and in Chinese speaking societies. He received his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. Full Bio

Dr. Chris Field is the founding director of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology, Melvin and Joan Lane Professor for Interdisciplinary Environmental Studies at Stanford University, and Faculty Director of Stanford's Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve. Understanding Muslim Societies
The World Affairs Councils of America, with the generous support of Carnegie Corporation of New York, continues its very successful Engage America Series Understanding Muslim Societies. The program will be held throughout 2014 and focuses on countries in the Middle East, as well as Afghanistan/Pakistan, and those relevant rising economic powers that are competing globally with the United States, such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
