In Flanders Fields 100 Years: Writing
on War, Loss and Remembrance

by Amanda Betts

A beautifully designed collection of essays on war, loss and remembrance to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the writing of Canada's most famous poem.

In this anthology, Canada's finest historians, novelists and poets contemplate the evolving meaning of the poem; the man who wrote it and the World War I setting from which it emerged; its themes of valour, grief and remembrance; and the iconic image of the poppy.

Our Finest Hour:
Canada Fights the Second World War
by David J. Berguson

From Hong Kong to the Rhine River Crossing,
Our Finest Hour  delves incisively into the pivotal battles of the Second World War and the roles of the Canadian army, navy and air force. Bestselling author David Bercuson probes the war on the ground, on the seas and in the air - from the bomber offensive over Germany to the Typhoon fighter squadrons with the Second Tactical Air Force in Europe. With an unfliching eye, he provides insight into the successes and failures, triumphs and shortcomings of the Canadian military.

Fight to the Finish
by Tim Cook

Historian Tim Cook displays his trademark storytelling ability in the second volume of his masterful account of Canadians in World War II. Cook combines an extraordinary grasp of military strategy with a deep empathy for the soldiers on the ground, at sea and in the air. Whether it's a minute-by-minute account of a gruelling artillery battle, vicious infighting among generals, the scene inside a medical unit, or the small details of a soldier's daily life, Cook creates a compelling narrative.
Never Surrender: Winston Churchill and Britain's Decision to Fight Nazi Germany in the Fateful Summer of 1940
by John Kelly

London in April, 1940, was a place of great fear and conflict. Everyone was on edge; civilization itself seemed imperiled. The Germans are marching. They have taken Poland, France, Holland, Belgium, and Czechoslovakia. They now menace Britain. Should Britain negotiate with Germany? The members of the War Cabinet bicker, yell, lose their control, and are divided. Churchill, leading the faction to fight, and Lord Halifax, cautioning that prudence is the way to survive, attempt to usurp one another by any means possible. Their country is on the line. And, in  Never Surrender , we feel we are alongside these complex and imperfect men, determining the fate of the British Empire.

Heaven is Beautiful:
How Dying Taught
Me that Death
is Just
the Beginning
by Peter Baldwin Panagore

*BARB'S PICK*

"In March 1980, Peter Panagore went ice climbing with a climbing partner on the world-famous Lower Weeping Wall, along the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park in Alberta.  On their descent, they became trapped on the side of the mountain.  As the sun set, Panagore was overcome by exhaustion and hypothermia and died on the side of the mountain.   In his minutes on the other side, he experienced hell, forgiveness, and unconditional love.  Heaven was beautiful.

This book is about hope, and about how we live our lives today.  A memorable story."

Don't Panic: Isis,
Terror and Today's Middle East
by Gwynne Dyer

*TOM'S PICK*

In  Don't Panic , Dyer first explains why the Middle East has become the global capital of terrorism. He then examines how terrorist organisations in the Arab world have evolved over time, with particular emphasis on the events of the past fifteen years and the current situation in Syria and Iraq. And in the end Dyer departs from his long-standing position that foreign interventions always make matters worse to argue that a little military intervention of the right kind may avert a genocide in Syria.

Cabin Porn: Inspiration For
Your Quiet Place Somewhere
by Zack Klein

*JAN'S PICK*

"I open this book to any page and feel like I can breathe.  It is a collection of more than 200 cabins (and other small structures) built by hand all over the world.  In the woods, in the desert, in the trees, sometimes even in the water.  Beautifully photographed, it's inspiration for anyone dreaming of leaving it all behind or just taking a mini break in the middle of the day."
Masterworks from
the Audain Art Museum, Whistler
by Ian Thom

*SHINO'S PICK*

Art is a window into culture and history, and there is no collection that portrays the astonishing breadth of British Columbia's art from the early nineteenth century to the present as superbly as the one at the Audain Art Museum in Whistler. This beautiful book brings together in a single volume many highlights from the museum's permanent galleries.
The Lake House
by Kate Morton

*MARIANNE'S PICK*

One midsummer's eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest child, eleven-month-old Theo, has vanished without a trace. What follows is a tragedy that tears the family apart in ways they never imagined.

Decades later, Alice is living in London, having enjoyed a long successful career as an author. Theo's case has never been solved, though Alice still harbors a suspicion as to the culprit.

"One of my favourite authors does it again with this new novel. Morton is a wonderful storyteller and has written another page turner. Highly recommended."

Where My Heart Used
to Beat
by Sebastian Faulks
FICTION

Having accepted a strange but intriguing invitation to a French island, psychiatrist Robert Hendricks meets the man who has commissioned him to write a biography. But his subject seems more interested in finding out about Robert's past than he does in revealing his own. For years, Robert has refused to discuss his past. After the war ended, he refused to go to reunions, believing in some way that denying the killing and the deaths of his friends and fellow soldiers would mean he wouldn't be defined by the experience. Suddenly, he can't keep the memories from overtaking him. But can he trust his memories and can we believe what other people tell us about theirs?

A Banquet of Consequences
by Elizabeth George
MYSTERY - FICTION

The unspoken secrets and buried lies of one family rise to the surface in Elizabeth George's newest novel of crime, passion, and tragic history. As Inspector Thomas Lynley investigates the London angle of an ever more darkly disturbing case, his partner, Barbara Havers, is looking behind the peaceful façade of country life to discover a twisted world of desire and deceit.
The Woman Who Walked in Sunshine
by Alexander McCall Smith
FICTION - MYSTERY

The New No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency Novel

Precious Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi are both back in harness at the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, but for once business is a bit slow. At Mma Makutsi's suggestion, Mma Ramotswe allows herself to be persuaded to take a holiday - her first ever, even if she finds it a bit odd that Mma Makusti should be so adamant about it. But just as Mma Ramotswe is ready to depart, a new client arrives, a young woman whose father was regarded as a hero in the history of Botswana. Now his reputation is being called into question - was he courageous, as is widely believed, or was he merely a philanderer and opportunist?

Rogue Lawyer
by John Grisham
FICTION

Sebastian defends people other lawyers won't go near: a vicious crime lord on death row; a homeowner arrested for shooting at a SWAT team that mistakenly invaded his house.  Why these clients? Because he believes everyone is entitled to a fair trial, even if he, Sebastian, has to cheat to secure one. He hates injustice, doesn't like insurance companies, banks, or big corporations; he distrusts all levels of government and laughs at the justice system's notions of ethical behavior.

On the right side of the law. Sort of.

The Road to Little Dribbling: More Notes From a Small Island
by Bill Bryson
TRAVEL

In this hotly anticipated new travel book, Bryson's first in fifteen years and sure to be greeted as the funniest book of the decade, he sets out on a brand-new journey, on a route he dubs the Bryson Line, from Bognor Regis on the south coast to Cape Wrath on the northernmost tip of Scotland.  Once again, he will guide us through all that's best and worst about Britain today, while doing that incredibly rare thing of making us laugh out loud in public.
An Irish Doctor in Love and at Sea
by Patrick Taylor
FICTION

Long before Dr. Fingal Flahertie O'Reilly came to the colourful Irish village of Ballybucklebo, young Surgeon-lieutenant O'Reilly answered the call of duty to serve in World War II.  Decades later, the war is long over, and O'Reilly is content to mend the bodies and souls of his patients in Ballybucklebo, but there are still changes and challenges aplenty. A difficult pregnancy, as well as an old colleague badly in denial concerning his own serious medical condition, tests O'Reilly and his young partner, Barry Laverty. But even with all that occupies him in the present, can O'Reilly ever truly let go of the ghosts from his past?

The Diamnd Caper
by Peter Mayle
FICTION

When a Riviera socialite's diamonds are stolen-the latest in a string of seemingly unconnected but ever more audacious jewelry heists across France, Elena flies in to investigate the insurance claim. It's a trip she's more than happy to make, as it gives her a chance to meet up with old friends in Marseille-and, particularly, with Sam.

Once reunited, Sam isn't entirely distracted by domestic matters. In the pattern of these "perfect crimes" he's beginning to see a master at work, and he's quickly determined to connect and solve the cases. But as he and Elena dig deeper, they begin to realize just how much is connected and how dangerous it may be to pursue the whole truth.
