Issue #39

At this time of year there is a chance that you will see this edition hit the inbox on April 1st, but I can assure you there is no 'April Fool Content' to sidetrack you.  (It is tempting mind - and just think of the stories you might come up with!) .

This time there is a focus on people and company culture as regards the articles because I am currently enjoying another set of sessions with my Video Mentor James Lavers who I first met around 4 years ago.  He is asking the group to define what our ideals and values are for the business and it is proving quite stimulating. You know, what do you stand for and what doctrine are you putting out there.  With me and quality management it is all about 'recognition'.

The reason for setting up the Inspired 9001 Supremos was to get that message out there so anybody involved in 9001 and the rest would know there is support for them regardless of what issues they are having to face at work.  What's it like where you are I wonder?
Do Small Businesses need to Think about Company Culture?
Some might think this is just a subject for the large corporation but no, it applies to any business. This is all about how you are seen by others and that includes your staff of course.

What are you guidelines for where you work; what is acceptable or unacceptable and how are you expected to behave etc.

Here James L.Heskett of Harvard features three short case studies from owners of SMEs on something you might like to get thinking about, especially if everyone appears to be doing 'their own thing'. It is something that ideally you should be able to convey at that initial interview when you set someone on and can impact on the productivity of your business as well.
Why Being 'Trained' and Being 'Competent' are not the Same
The last Supremos Webinar focused on the whole training aspect of 9001 and led to some interesting comments.  What shone through more than anything was the consensus that attending a course and duly signing off to say you were there has little substance in demonstrating you are competent - you have to do something to earn that either during the course of back at work!

Quite a lot of my colleagues were of this opinion which was re-assuring.  So often I see people being sent off on a course and the back end process is totally missing.  By that I mean:
  • No review of the course itself as to whether it was any good and would be recommend to colleagues.
  • What plans are there to make use of this knowledge
  • A review after an agreed time to check for effective performance thus permitting the delegate to be declared 'competent'
  • Perhaps a regular review to maintain that status as well
This can also apply to internal training sessions such as auditors. On my course I get delegates to sit an exam after going through the 'theory' then get them to shadow me doing one of their audits.  Finally I get them to do three on their own but submit the documentation to me before declaring them 'competent'.

Needless to say, working on their own QMS and actually doing audits from their schedule has its advantages provided you are only interested in doing internal audits.  Remember though, If you wish to do auditing as a living then that would be better served by an IRCA approved course.

Finally, you can even work your training system through your skills matrix by declaring different levels such as 'Trained', 'Work Supervised', Work Unsupervised' then 'Able to Train'.

Your staff are important so train them properly - then get out of their way!

What Does Leadership Really Entail?
A fair question and very much in keeping with this issue.  As Rohan Chandran points out in this article there have been so many 'recipes for success' that another won't hurt. As I see it, one of the most common grumbles around a company that I hear would be the lack of direction or commitment from the top - especially on 9001.

That apart, here are some neat ideas that might stimulate you into action if you run a business or that you could add to the old toolkit if you are advising same.

4 Ways to Come Up with Brilliant Ideas when the Pressure is On
As I write this section I am wondering if that title isn't a bit misleading - isn't the pressure always on the way business operates these days?

Well then, even more reason to see what Michael Levin has to tell you in relation to how to survive the pressure of modern day business. As he says at the top of the article, creativity is a muscle - use it or lose it!
10 Tips on How to Stay Ahead of your Competitors
I am sure, you like me, would see this as being rather important.  As with most aspects of business you need a strategy so that you remain focused on the job in hand.  Find out what works for you then stick to it and pass it on to colleagues so that it becomes part of your company culture.

I found what Stephen Archer had to say here as being both refreshing and edgy as some of his ideas may push you out of your comfort zone - sack a few customers for instance!  See what you think.
