Letter to CUGH Members
April 22, 2014

Dear CUGH Member,

We are delighted to announce the results of CUGH's 2014 election for new Board Members and changes to our Executive Committee.

Our members voted and the individuals elected to CUGH's Board are:

  • Nelson Sewankambo, Principal, Makerere University, President Uganda National Academy of Sciences.
  • Margaret Bentley, Associate Dean for Global Health, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill
  • Pierre Buekens, Dean of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Director of the Office of Global Health,  Tulane University
  • Patricia Conrad, Associate Dean for Global Health Programs for the School of Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis.
  • Patricia Davidson,  Dean of the Johns Hopkins University of Nursing
  • Muhammed Zaman, Associate Professor and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Affairs, Department of Biomedical Engineering, Boston Univ.

We would like to thank the Nominations Committee comprised of Tom Quinn, Ann Kurth, Guy Palmer, and Larry Gostin and CUGH's Director of Operations, Dalal Najjar for  running this election.

Board members worked very hard over the last few years as the organization  transitioned from its home at the University of California in San Francisco to having a permanent secretariat in Washington DC.   No one has put more time into our organization than our outgoing chair, Judy Wasserheit who will complete her term in May.  Judy put in countless hours providing exceptional leadership and devoting an extraordinary amount of time strengthening CUGH.  She will be replaced by Tim Brewer our vice chair as per CUGH's bylaws. Fortunately, Judy will stay on for a year as our past president, continuing to provide us with her sage guidance.

We would also like to thank our treasurer Robin Paetzold who devoted many hours providing us with administrative, financial and organizational advice that is invaluable for any board and any organization. Robin's contribution and commitment to our organization will be deeply missed and we wish her continued success in all of her endeavors.

Afaf Meleis is also leaving our board, and we are extremely grateful for her contributions chairing our Advocacy Committee, as a key person on our membership committee and providing ongoing guidance throughout this growth period.

We would also like to thank all of those who ran in this election. We had a stellar roster of outstanding global health leaders and it is unfortunate that they could not all be on the board.  We look forward to collaborating with them and engaging them in our activities.

Tim Brewer has graciously accepted to transition from the Vice Chair position to our Chair. Tim has provided an extraordinary amount of guidance and work supporting CUGH in innumerable ways over many years. He brings wisdom, commitment, institutional knowledge, innovation and vision to this position.

We look forward to collaborating with you and your organizations and colleagues in the years ahead. This is an exciting time to be in global health. Our board and secretariat are excited about what all of us, together, will be able to accomplish in the future.

Best wishes,

Keith Martin MD
