Low-Cost Airline to Establish New Nonstop Flights, Base Crew in Pittsburgh

Allegiant has added a fourth Florida destination from Pittsburgh with nonstop service to Orlando/Sanford beginning Nov. 5.

The company is also establishing a new base of operations at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). Beginning December 24, 2015, Allegiant will base a single 156-seat Airbus A319 aircraft at the airport, creating jobs for pilots, flight attendants and airport service personnel. Allegiant will also further grow its Pittsburgh operation this fall when it begins operating charter flights to Punta Cana and Cancun on behalf of Apple Vacations.

Allegiant began service from Pittsburgh in February 2015 with ten weekly flights to three Florida destinations. Since that time, the community's enthusiastic response to Allegiant's low-fares has led the carrier to add summer seasonal flights to Myrtle Beach, and now nonstop flights to Orlando.

According to a recent article in FlightGlobal, f ormer hub airports across the Midwest are in the midst of a renaissance. Low-cost carriers including Allegiant Air are adding new routes and opening bases in former mid-size cities like Cleveland, Cincinnati, Memphis and Pittsburgh.

"Mid-size markets have lost over 15% of their seats since 2007 and a lot of that demand is still there," says Lukas Johnson, vice-president of network and pricing at Allegiant. "There's some gaps in the market that we think we can serve."

Emergency Drill Helps Airport Hone Response
Airport Responders, Mutual Aid Partners Conduct Successful Exercise

In accordance with FAA requirements, the Allegheny County Airport Authority conducted a full-scale emergency exercise on Aug. 20.

Airport employees and emergency responders were joined by local mutual aid fire companies and EMS providers. Additionally, more than 100 civilian volunteers assisted, playing the role of passengers and others involved with the emergency scenario.

The drill is a comprehensive test of Pittsburgh International Airport's emergency management system, and is designed to measure readiness, functionality and effectiveness of the airport's emergency plan through mobilization of resources and personnel who would be dispatched in the event of a real emergency.

National Aviation Day Celebrated

Boy Scouts Earn Merit Badges at AGC

Allegheny County Airport Authority officials observed National Aviation Day on Aug. 19 by helping Boy Scout troops from across the region earn their aviation merit badges at Allegheny County Airport (AGC).

The scouts participated in activities including interviewing pilots and mechanics, exploring aircraft, observing inspections and maintenance of aircraft and runway/ramp/security operations, as well as building model airplanes.

"It's a great program to have at this facility because the scouts can actually observe the planes up close and speak directly to aviation officials from a variety of career fields," said Gerry Vaerewyck, FAA safety representative and scout master for troop 646 from Squirrel Hill. "There's no doubt that some of them will take a lifelong interest in aviation."

In addition to ACAA officials, STAT MedEvac, Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics, Corporate Air, Voyager Jet, Pittsburgh Flight Training and other groups helped facilitate activities with the scouts.
