GUIDEWAY SEGMENT PRODUCTION IN FULL SWING

Production is underway at a Kalaeloa casting yard, where more than 80 Kiewit employees are busy building the concrete guideway segments that will sit on top of the columns to form the elevated guideway for Honolulu's rail system.

HART officials were joined by Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell, Honolulu City Councilman Breene Harimoto, staff members of Hawaii's congressional delegation and members of the media as they toured the 34-acre facility today. About  a dozen guideway segments are being produced daily.

"The production of these segments means we are on schedule," said HART's Executive Director and CEO Dan Grabauskas said. " We will begin placing these guideway segments on the columns in the next few weeks. We are on track and on the right course to complete the project on time, on budget and with an eye on quality."

Each 50-ton segment is approximately 11 feet long, 30 feet wide and 7 feet tall.  They are molded from 18 cubic yards of concrete and take five days to make, and another 10 days for the concrete to cure. Each segment also goes through numerous inspections and quality checks.

Nearly 5,200 segments will be used to form the spans that will make up the

10 miles of guideway between East Kapolei and Aloha Stadium.

"These segments are built to last 100 years -- and the rail system will serve our community for generations to come," Grabauskas said.

YOUR OPINION MATTERS

The City's Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) oversees the

Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) Program that will create eight neighborhood plans for the stations along the City's 20-mile elevated rail system.

A key element of the TOD plans is the availability of affordable housing within walking distance of the rail stations.

DPP and the Mayor's Office on Housing are conducting a survey to help develop an Affordable Housing Strategy for our island, and your opinion counts.

The short survey asks residents to share their views on local housing needs. Ultimately, the City expects the Affordable Housing Strategy to help prioritize City resources in the construction and maintenance of affordable housing. DPP will use the plan to revise financial policies, programs and land use regulations.

So please take a few minutes to fill out the survey, which can be found at
