CELEBRATE, LEARN, AND SHARE

"We Shall Overcome" is frequently referred to as the anthem of the Civil Rights Movement. Originally a 19th-century hymn, it was used as a labor song in the 1940s; Zilphia Horton of the Highlander Folk School in Tennessee heard African American tobacco workers singing it on a picket line in 1946. One of those workers, Lucille Simmons, changed the original lyric from "I" to "We" making it more powerful for a mass movement. Horton added some verses and taught this version to Pete Seeger in 1947.

In 1899, Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing was written as a poem by James Weldon Johnson and then set to music by his brother John Rosamond Johnson. It was first performed in the Johnsons' hometown of Jacksonville, Florida as part of a celebration of Lincoln's Birthday on February 12, 1900 by a choir of 500 schoolchildren at the segregated Stanton School, where James Weldon Johnson was principal.  James Weldon Johnson was born in 1871. He was an African American composer, lyricist, publisher, lawyer, and educator.  The song was soon adopted by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as its official song.  The song was often sung during the civil right movement and continues to be sung in many churches today often with the congregation rising as they would when singing the National Anthem. While adopted by many as the "Black" National Anthem, the song inspires any people who have struggled and sends a message of victory and hope for all who may be oppressed.  It was not intended to be a replacement for the National Anthem, the "Star-Spangled Banner, " but may be sung in conjunction with it.

Join us this month for special events and opportunities to celebrate, learn, and share.

See you Sunday at 9am and 11am.

Faithfully,

Rev. J. Dwayne Johnson

LITURGICAL DANCE MINISTRY TO SPONSOR A SIX-WEEK DANCE WORKSHOP

"Have you ever felt the Spirit calling you to worship through

movement, through dance? Liturgical dance is a powerful, passionate
and transformative form of worship but often we allow things like
technique or body image to hold us back.

Josie Hoover, a Doctoral candidate at Wesley Theological Seminary, will be joining us for six weeks to demonstrate how powerful the ministry of liturgical dance can be in the life of worship. The start date is Thursday, March 13 at 6:30pm. We'll meet downstairs in the Music room.

The prayer is to show/teach/remind dancers how liturgical dance is

a worshiping arts ministry, how it is a calling and how to nurture
their calling in dance (physically, spiritually, mentally).

No previous dance experience is necessary and we hope that you will
take this opportunity to worship with us and perhaps awaken new
spiritual gifts within yourself. This opportunity is open to the
ENTIRE congregation.
