TEXT CHAPTER 5: HEALING AND WHOLENESS
IX. The Eternal Fixation

87 Second, although Freud misinterpreted what the Holy Spirit told him, or better, reminded him of, he was too honest to deny more than was necessary to keep his fear in tolerable bounds as he perceived the situation. Therefore, he emphasized that the point in development at which the mind is fixated is more real to itself than the external reality with which it disagrees. This again could have been a powerful release mechanism had Freud not decided to involve it in a strong defense system because he perceived it as an attack.

1These ideas are for today's review:

[46] God is the Love in which I forgive.

2God does not forgive because He has never condemned. The blameless cannot blame, and those who have accepted their innocence see nothing to forgive. Yet forgiveness is the means by which I will recognize my innocence. It is the reflection of God's Love on earth. It will bring me near enough to Heaven that the Love of God can reach down to me and raise me to my home.

[47] God is the Strength in which I trust.

3It is not my own strength through which I forgive. It is through the strength of God in me, which I am remembering as I forgive. As I begin to see, I recognize His reflection on earth. I forgive all things because I feel the stirring of His strength in me. And I begin to remember the Love I chose to forget, but Which has not forgotten me.

[48] There is nothing to fear.

4How safe the world will look to me when I can see it! It will not look anything like what I imagine I see now. Everyone and everything I see will lean toward me to bless me. I will recognize in everyone my dearest Friend. What could there be to fear in a world which I have forgiven and which has forgiven me?

[49] God's Voice speaks to me all through the day.

5There is not a moment in which God's Voice ceases to call on my forgiveness to save me. There is not a moment in which His Voice fails to direct my thoughts, guide my actions, and lead my feet. I am walking steadily on toward truth. There is nowhere else I can go because God's Voice is the only voice and the only guide that has been given to His Son.

[50] I am sustained by the Love of God.

6As I listen to God's Voice, I am sustained by His Love. As I open my eyes, His Love lights up the world for me to see. As I forgive, His Love reminds me that His Son is sinless. And as I look upon the world with the vision He has given me, I remember that I am His Son.

SonShip Video Review I Introduction

 Workbook Part I ~ Review I

 <AUDIO><VIDEO>
Voice and Music by CIMS SonShip Radio
<
GUIDANCE from ELDER BROTHER>

1Beginning with today, we will have a series of review periods. Each of them will cover five of the ideas already presented, starting with the first and ending with the fiftieth. There will be a few short comments after each of the ideas which you should consider in your review. In the practice periods, the exercises should be done as follows:

2Begin the day by reading the five ideas, with the comments included. Thereafter, it is not necessary to follow any particular order in considering them, though each one should be practiced at least once. Devote two minutes or more to each practice period, thinking about the idea and the related comments. Do this as often as possible during the day. If any one of the five ideas appeals to you more than the others, concentrate on that one. At the end of the day, however, be sure to review all of them once more.

3It is not necessary to cover the comments that follow each idea literally or thoroughly in the practice periods. Rather, try merely to emphasize the central point and think about it as part of your review of the idea to which it relates.

4The review exercises should be done with your eyes closed and when you are alone in a quiet place if possible. This is emphasized particularly for reviews at your stage of learning. It will be necessary, however, that you learn to require no special settings in which to apply what you have learned. You will need it most in situations which appear to be upsetting, rather than in those which already seem to be calm and quiet.

5The purpose of your learning is to enable you to bring the quiet with you and to heal distress and turmoil. This is not done by avoiding them and seeking a haven of isolation for yourself. You will yet learn that peace is part of you and requires only that you be there to embrace any situation in which you are. And finally you will learn that there is no limit to where you are, so that your peace is everywhere, as you are.

6You will note that for review purposes the ideas are not always given in quite their original form of statement. Use them as they are given here. It is not necessary to return to the original statements nor to apply the ideas as was suggested then. We are now emphasizing the relationships among the first fifty of the ideas we have covered and the cohesiveness of the thought system to which they are leading you.

 LESSON 60~ REVIEW I
[Review of Lesson 46-50]

Today is the last review for another 20 days which is when we arrive at Review II. Some course students absolutely love these reviews because we start to get some integration of the thought system. But others find it difficult because of the number of lessons they believe that they need to remember. Some suggestions to address this are to find the overall theme for the five lessons and focus on that; another is to find the one or two lessons that really speak  to you the most and do them together with related thoughts which generally are thoughts encompassed by the other lessons; or focus on all lessons at the beginning and end of the day and pick a lesson each hour of the day from the review and spend time with that one on the hour, ending the day with all of the lessons. Clearly though it is important that you not make the practice about form or ritual but about understanding the content or meaning. So whatever works best for you is what you want to do so that you can really connect to what is being taught here and most important that you can apply the forgiveness practice in your day to day life.

Today's review encompasses the theme that God's strength and His love are there to get us through whatever seeming difficulties we are experiencing and that we can trust it and rely on it. While we want to feel innocent we hold guilt in our minds, which to a large extent is unconscious, although we do get in touch with it at a conscious level in our day to day activities. It shows up for us when we encounter people and situations in our lives that trigger fear, anger and attack. These are all opportunities for us to become aware of the guilt that is there.  Forgiveness is the means available to us to clear away the guilt by looking at it with the light of Jesus looking with us. He is a symbol of the innocence, which is in our right minds.

Notice when guilt comes up for you today and be willing to take responsibility for it. Taking responsibility for it means that we see there is no one to blame, including ourselves. When we blame ourselves we are putting ourselves on the cross and we suffer in the belief that suffering will bring us something. The bigger the mistake in our eyes, the longer the ego demands that we pay. Yet this is just the way that the ego keeps itself in business. We have a choice and can choose to stop defending and justifying our reasons to hold onto the guilt.

When we judge and criticize ourselves, we project that judgment on others. Now we expect their judgment in turn. This brings lack of peace and joy in our lives. When we withdraw our judgment on ourselves, we can know our own innocence. But this requires help of the Holy Spirit. "It is not my own strength through which I forgive. It is through the strength of God in me, which I am remembering as I forgive." (2.2-3) The ego will never undo itself. We need help from outside of this dream.  And with that help we will "begin to remember the Love which we chose to forget." (2.6)  We have forgotten who we are and the problem is that we keep choosing to condemn so that we don't need to remember who we are. While that seems insane not to want to know ourselves as we were created, it is because we want to maintain the separation and thus hold onto our individual self.

"How safe the world will look to me when I can see it!   It will not look anything like what I imagine I see now.  Everyone and everything I see will lean toward me to bless me." (3.2-4)  Everyone and everything is included in the safety that is in our minds. The reminder of our perfect safety abides in our right minds. Everyone we meet is a witness to our inward condition. When we know our own innocence we see ourselves as blessed and receive that blessing through others. We experience our One Self when the guilt is released and we see with Christ's vision. So when we go to this place of safety within where the truth resides, then the world becomes a reflection of this choice. Again, it does not mean that there are not people seemingly attacking us, only that we don't interpret their behavior as attack but only as a call for love and understanding and our own peace remains undisturbed. We see the beauty of a forgiven world. It can't be otherwise if, as Jesus teaches, ideas leave not their source. Therefore if the mind is the source and only peace is apparent in the mind, then there can be nothing to see except peace everywhere.

When we experience our own innocence, then we will "recognize in everyone my dearest Friend." (3.5) What a beautiful thought! Now we see the beauty which can only be seen through the eyes of holiness that comes from that place within us where Love abides.   How beautiful it is to see the truth of who someone is regardless of their perceived wrong doings. This is how we know that love is who we are. We see it shining in everyone because we see through the eyes of holiness! No exceptions! And with such love surrounding us, fear becomes impossible when guilt is gone from our minds.

"Can you imagine how beautiful those you forgive will look to you? In no fantasy have you ever seen anything so lovely. Nothing you see here, sleeping or waking, comes near to such loveliness. And nothing will you value like unto this, nor hold so dear. Nothing that you remember that made your heart sing with joy has ever brought you even a little part of the happiness this sight will bring you. For you will see the Son of God. You will behold the beauty the Holy Spirit loves to look upon, and which He thanks the Father for. He was created to see this for you, until you learned to see it for yourself."   (T.  17.II 1:1-9)

When we stay vigilant in our practice by watching our thoughts and releasing them with the help of the Holy Spirit, we learn to see with Christ's vision. The Holy Spirit is always there in our minds so that when we have judged someone, we can always turn to Him and ask for His help to seeing our brother differently.  Whether our judgments and reactions show up as a result of a   news story, a TV show,  a movie, or because someone we feel has wronged us, these are all opportunities to recognize that the interpretation that we give to events are just projections of our own guilt.  When we turn to the Holy Spirit, He helps us see that nothing real has happened. Forgiveness is only necessary in the dream where there is judgment. "God does not forgive because He has never condemned." (1.2)

The motivation to stay vigilant with our thoughts throughout the day  is reinforced when we see that forgiveness brings us happiness. By looking at our dark thoughts and bringing them to the truth, Jesus assures us that this will show us a beautiful world that is safe, full of love, abundance, peace and joy. This is the real world. What else would we rather have than this? Our only purpose in this world is for healing the mind. It is what time was made for. Our only responsibility is to recognize the barriers that we have put up as a defense against the love that we are. The only path to take in this world is to know the truth. Every other path leads us nowhere.

Every crisis in our lives is a call for healing. Every problem is an opportunity to choose love instead of fear. Is it simple? Yes. Is it easy? No. It takes discipline, courage, honesty, humility and great vigilance.  And it takes calling on God's strength.

We will ultimately all awaken from  this dream because Jesus keeps reminding us that the end is certain. How could it not be when the truth resides in us? There is nothing we need to do.    We are all being called to remember who we are. And God's Voice is speaking to us ceaselessly, all through the day. We just need to stop the chatter in our own minds long enough to listen.   When every barrier to love is removed, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we will come to know the fullness of the love that we are and then we will see a world that shines that love  back on us. "And as I look upon the world with the vision He has given me, I remember that I am His Son." (5.5)This is our ultimate goal.Meanwhile, everything in our world becomes another opportunity for healing. We see what needs to be healed in us by what is being triggered in us. The world mirrors our inside condition.  Our reactions, our painful experiences provide ample motivation to continue on this path.

Love and blessings, Sarah

Chapter Five

Healing and Wholeness

IX. The Eternal Fixation

83 The idea of "set" is among the better psychological concepts. Actually, it is used quite frequently in the Bible and also in this course under many different terms. For example, "God will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed (or set) on Him," a statement which means that God's peace is set in the Holy Spirit because it is fixed on God. It is also fixed in you. You, then, are fixed in the peace of God. The concept of "fixation" is also a very helpful one which Freud understood perfectly. Unfortunately, he lost his understanding because he was afraid and, as you know all too well, fear is incompatible with good judgment. Fear distorts thinking and therefore disorders thought.

84 Freud's system of thought was extremely ingenious because Freud was extremely ingenious, and a mind must endow its thoughts with its own attributes. This is its inherent strength, although it may misuse its power. Freud lost much of the potential value of his thought system because he did not include himself in it. This is a dissociated state because the thinker cuts himself off from his thoughts. Freud's thought was so conflicted that he could not have retained his sanity as he saw it without dissociation. That is why the many contradictions which are quite apparent in his thinking became increasingly less apparent to him. A man who knows what fixation really means and yet does not yield to it is terribly afraid.

85 Fixation is the pull of God, on whom your mind is fixed because of the Holy Spirit's irrevocable set. "Irrevocable" means "cannot be called back or redirected." The irrevocable nature of the Holy Spirit's set is the basis for His unequivocal Voice. The Holy Spirit never changes His mind. Clarity of thought cannot occur under conditions of vacillation. Unless a mind is fixed in its purpose, it is not clear. Clarity literally means the state of light, and enlightenment is understanding. Enlightenment stands under perception because you have denied it as the real foundation of thought. This is the basis for all delusional systems.

86 The concept of fixation as Freud saw it has a number of learning advantages. First, it recognizes that man can be fixated at a point in development which does not accord with a point in time. This clearly could have been a means toward real release from the time belief, had Freud pursued it with an open mind. Freud, however, suffered all his life from refusal to allow eternity to dawn upon his mind and enlighten it truly. As a result, he overlooked now entirely and merely saw the continuity of past and future.

88 Third, although Freud interpreted fixation as involving irrevocable "danger points" to which the mind could always regress, the concept can also be interpreted as an irrevocable call to sanity which the mind cannot lose. Freud himself could not accept this interpretation, but throughout his thought system, the "threat" of fixation remained and could never be eliminated by any living human being. Essentially, this was the basis of Freud's pessimism, personally as well as theoretically. He tried every means his very inventive mind could devise to set up a form of therapy which could enable the mind to escape from fixation forever, even though he knew this was impossible.

89 This knowledge plagued Freud's belief in his own thought system at every turn because he was both an honest man and a healer. He was therefore only partially insane and was unable to relinquish the hope of release even though he could not cope with it. The reason for this amount of detail is because you are in the same position. You were eternally fixated on God in your creation, and the pull of this fixation is so strong that you will never overcome it. The reason is perfectly clear. The fixation is on a level so high that it cannot be surmounted. You are always being pulled back to your Creator because you belong to Him.

90 Do you really believe you can make a voice that can drown out His? Do you really believe that you can devise a thought system which can separate you from His? Do you really believe that you can plan for your safety and joy better than He can? You need be neither careful nor careless; you need merely cast your cares upon Him because He careth for you. You are His care because He loves you. His Voice reminds you always that all hope is yours because of His care. You cannot choose to escape His care because that is not His Will, but you can choose to accept His care and use the infinite power of His care for all those He created by it.

91 There have been many healers who did not heal themselves. They have not moved mountains by their faith because their faith was not whole. Some of them have healed the sick at times, but they have not raised the dead. Unless the healer heals himself, he does not believe that there is no order of difficulty in miracles. He has not learned that every mind God created is equally worthy of being healed because God created it whole. You are merely asked to return to God the mind as He created it. He asks you only for what He gave, knowing that this giving will heal you. Sanity is wholeness, and the sanity of your brothers is yours.

92 Why should you listen to the endless insane calls which you think are made upon you when you know the Voice of God Himself is in you? God commended His Spirit to you and asks that you commend yours to Him. He wills to keep it in perfect peace because you are of one mind and spirit with Him. Excluding yourself from the Atonement is the ego's last-ditch defense of its own existence. It reflects both the ego's need to separate and your willingness to side with its separateness. This willingness means that you do not want to be healed.

93 But the time is now. You have not been asked to work out the plan of salvation yourselves because, as I told you before, the remedy is not of your making. God Himself gave you the perfect correction for everything you have made which is not in accord with His holy Will. I have made His plan perfectly explicit to you and have also told you of your part in His plan and how urgent it is that you fulfill it. There is time for delay, but there need not be. God weeps at the "sacrifice" of His Children, who believe they are lost to Him.

94 I have already told you that whenever you are not wholly joyous it is because you have reacted with a lack of love to some Soul which God created. Perceiving this as "sin," you become defensive because you expect attack. The decision to react in this way, however, is yours and can therefore be undone. It cannot be undone by repentance in the usual sense because this implies guilt. If you allow yourself to feel guilty, you will reinforce the error rather than allow it to be undone for you.

95 Decisions cannot be difficult. This is obvious if you realize that you must already have made a decision not to be wholly joyous if that is how you feel. Therefore, the first step in the undoing is to recognize that you actively decided wrongly but can as actively decide otherwise. Be very firm with yourselves in this, and keep yourselves fully aware of the fact that the undoing process, which does not come from you, is nevertheless within you because God placed it there. Your part is merely to return your thinking to the point at which the error was made and give it over to the Atonement in peace. Say to yourselves the following as sincerely as you can, remembering that the Holy Spirit will respond fully to your slightest invitation:

96 I must have decided wrongly because I am not at peace.
I made the decision myself, but I can also decide otherwise.
I will to decide otherwise because I want to be at peace.
I do not feel guilty because the Holy Spirit will undo
all the consequences of my wrong decision if I will let Him.
I will to let Him, by allowing Him to decide for God for Me.
