We started the New Year with a "cold day" (vs. a snow day) on the 7th of January, and this cold and blustery winter continues--but is not stopping us! In January, we had a record crowd for College Day. Our "Meet the Head of School" cross country tour continued to the West. In early February, we visited our alumni friends living in Denver, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. A huge thank you to our event hosts, Kraig Kayser '78, William Martin '80, and Joe Syracuse '86. These gatherings would not be nearly as successful without your help and enthusiasm!

Our tour will continue this spring to Washington, D.C. and Boston, and a Garden Party in the Rochester area this summer.

Harley alumnus, Peter Davidson '72, an internist and professor at New York University Medical School, came back to Harley for one day to teach two periods of Hospice class and present at an Upper School assembly. Peter's talk was titled, "What You Need to Start Doing Right Now to Get Into Medical School." His satirical story started off with several photos and amusing narratives from his days when he was a student at Harley, and the surprising paths he chose: made the decision not to go to college, instead worked as a dishwasher and cook at the Lake Placid Holiday Inn, then a Nursing Assistant in a surgical ICU unit, followed by a grand canoe trip in Labrador and Quebec with four other Harley graduates. He eventually decided to attend Haverford College, where he studied history, literature and philosophy. He also took, and almost failed, biology. It was not until junior year, after a conversation with a friend of his brother's, that he decided he wanted to pursue a career in medicine. He recently started working at NYU Medical Center, but spent much of his career as Chief of Internal Medicine at the Boston University. He finished the assembly with some words of advice to the students on how to Become What Thou Art:
  • Try stuff
  • There is no shame in starting small
  • Spend time out of your comfort zone
  • Find something you are passionate about, even if it is not on the road to "somewhere"
Thank you for coming back to share your Harley history, experience, and wisdom with us, Peter!

I was recently sent this article from the Yale Daily News, written by Harley graduate and now Yale student, Chen-Eddy Wang '12. None of us knew that Eddy had an issue with stuttering. Eddy, thank you for letting us share this beautifully written piece--it is truly an inspiring story!

If you have a story to share or are interested in coming to Harley to speak to our students, please let me know. We love showing off our alumni!

Blast!

Blast!, Harley's annual school fundraising gala, will be held on March 29, 2014 at Temple B'rith Kodesh in Brighton. Proceeds from the event directly benefit all Harley students by helping to fund areas that support our unique programs, faculty development, and tuition assistance. Ten percent of Blast! proceeds also support the Horizons at Harley program, by making scholarships available.

Please mark your calendars to join us in the fun. We are committed to making this annual fundraiser the most successful, the most enjoyable, and most well attended in its 15 year history. If you were at last year's gala event, you know that it will be hard to beat. The 2013 Gala for Blast! raised $102,000 and was attended by more than 300 Harley and Rochester community members! We really did have a blast--great food and refreshments, fun dancing, and excellent auction items. We are confident that with your help, we can surpass last year's success.

Here's how Harley Alumni can help today:

Attend

Tickets are $85 per person and $25 for Alumni classes 2003-2013.

Sponsor

Blast! sponsors receive many benefits, including premier seating, marketing recognition, an ad in the event program, and more. Gold, Silver, and Bronze sponsors receive a listing on the event invitation mailed to more than 2,000 people!

Advertise

Ranging from a full-page ad to a line listing, placing an ad in the Blast! program allows your business to inexpensively market to hundreds of people while supporting Harley and Horizons at Harley students.

Donate Auction Items

Please consider donating an item or service to be auctioned at the event. Past items have included timeshare vacation property, wine tasting packages, Kindles, art work, jewelry, gift certificates, car leases, airline miles, and more.

Buy a 50/50 raffle ticket

Tickets are $20 each. The drawing will be at the event, but you don't need to attend to win. It's really simple, Harley receives 50% and the winning ticket holder receives 50%. The more we sell the more you can win.

Tell your friends about Blast!

If you know someone who owns a business that might be interested in sponsoring the event, donating an auction item, or placing an ad, please share information with them. Blast! is open to the public, and we gladly welcome anyone who is interested in supporting our school.

To make a reservation, buy raffle tickets, download forms, and to learn more about supporting this important event, visit Blast! on the Harley website.
