Updated Tool Lets Users Compare States on Education and R&D

ClassroomAid

The newly updated, online, interactive state data allows policymakers, educators, and other users to discern trends in education, science, and research in each of the 50 states. This free resource supplements the state data in the 2014 Science and Engineering Indicators report, the premier source of information and analysis of the nation's position in science and engineering education and research. The biennial report is published by the National Science Board, the policy making body of the National Science Foundation.

White House Science Adviser Criticizes FIRST Act

Science Insider

Pending legislation to alter the grant making process at the National Science Foundation (NSF) "would have an extraordinarily unfortunate effect" on the $7 billion research agency, presidential science adviser John Holdren said today. Holdren's comments, made at the annual AAAS Forum on Science and Technology Policy, are the first public reaction from the White House to the Frontiers in Innovation, Research, Science, and Technology (FIRST) Act.

Why Common Core Math Upsets Parents: Their Own Math Abilities are Lacking
Syracuse.com
In the past few months we have been inundated with stories (and photos) of parents frustrated with the mathematics education of their children -- Facebook and Twitter posts of worksheets, which parents deem ridiculous and obscene for their children; work that engineers and scientists can't do that we are asking first-graders to complete. As a teacher of mathematics in the state of New York, I say "Amen." If you, as an adult, are finding the work of your child too difficult, you have just proven the state of mathematics education in the United States over the past 20 years.

Does Your School Teach Computer Science? Should It?
Edudemic

More courses in STEM subjects, teaching more students how to code, and getting more girls and women into traditionally male professions (ie, the STEM subjects) are all big topics these days. The main issue that all of these things address is that as our world develops technologically and becomes more tech dependent, we will need more students trained in disciplines that can support that, and currently, there is a huge skills gap. The handy infographic below takes a look at how to unlock the code to student success, and addresses computer science specifically, and how few schools teach computer science courses at all.

Eight Ways to Land K-12 STEM Funding
Inside Philanthropy
Funding for science, technology, engineering and mathematics education (STEM) is one of the most active and growing fields of philanthropy. Even setting aside government funds, there are dozens of foundations and corporations that make this a primary cause. Funding for K-12 STEM education is especially hot right now, as the importance of early exposure to science careers becomes increasingly apparent.
