Introducing...Reston, VA!

We announced our winners last week. Now, it's time to introduce them. Starting today, this four-part series will continue through the weeks leading up to our awards event on March 25. First up is Reston, VA. Intent on being age-intentional, there are no senior centers in this community. Instead, senior programming's blended with those of children and youth at the Reston Community Center. "Many evenings and most weekends there are classes, activities, festivals and entertainment for young and old alike," wrote Delegate Kenneth Plum (D-Reston), a long-time resident. He and his wife, Jane, raised four children in that community. "As we contemplate retirement, we have decided that we will stay in Reston. Just as there were so many opportunities for us as a family, there are endless prospects for us as we grow older." Stay tuned for next week, when we introduce City of Parkland, FL.

Family Connection Grants Alert

With the Adoption Incentive Program and the Family Connections Grants expired in October. Generations United invites supporters to call their U.S. Senator and Representatives to get the ball rolling to extend those programs. "The delay," according to the ALERT, "has already caused us to lose funding that was found for the Family Connections Grants to be extended." Learn more

Funding Opportunities

Art Works Grant. Generations United encourages intergenerational proposals. The National Endowment for the Arts is offering grants between $10,000 and $100,000 for innovative art that engages the full range of demographics of their communities, as well as individuals of all physical and cognitive abilities. Deadline: Rolling. Learn more

Youth Grant. Katie's Krops is hosting a grant cycle for youth, ages 9 to 16, to win a grant to start a Katie's Krops vegetable garden in their community, where the whole harvest is donated to people in need. Grantees are awarded a gift card for $400 to a garden center of their choice in their area, have support from Katie's Krops, and are given a digital camera to document the garden and the harvest. According to Impact International's new report, knowledge share flows both ways in the workforce. For example, young talent can share their expertise in areas such as technology and social media, while older participants offer up their experience and understanding of the company's history, culture and values. Where is the Land of Opportunity?: The Geography of Intergenerational Mobility in the U.S.

The Equality of Opportunity Project released a study that found that areas with greater mobility had five characteristics among which were less income inequality, greater social capital, and more stable families. The report also found that, contrary to popular perception, economic mobility hasn't changed significantly over time. Learn more
