From the President...
Fall is here, and with it comes the holiday season. In this newsletter, you will find many great opportunities to enjoy the season with your friends and neighbors here in Mableton.
MIC will host our next
Community Meeting on October 13 at 7pm on the topic of whether Mableton should be a city. We will have an informative line-up of speakers, so plan now to attend. MIC's zoning committee will also meet later this month. Anyone with an interest in getting involved in analyzing zoning applications and providing community input is welcome. All the details of both these meetings are below.

Community Meeting - Should Mableton Be A City?

|
Should Mableton become a city? That's the topic of MIC's next Community Meeting on Tuesday, October 13th at 7pm at the South Cobb Community Center at 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton. To be clear, MIC is not taking a position pro or con on this topic. In keeping with our tradition of providing forums for information exchange for the community, MIC wants to share information to help residents understand the issues and make informed decisions.
Speakers will address the process of how a city is formed, the services that a city would need to address, tax impacts for the residents of a new city and the like. Speakers will be from existing cities such as Sandy Springs as well as those who are advocating for cities now such as Tucker and South Fulton. You will definitely want to put this on your calendar and to make plans to attend.

| Free Candlelite Concert - Milkshake Mayfield |

Saturday, October 10th at 8pm
|
The
South Cobb Arts Alliance (SCAA) will present the final free concert of the 2015
 season when
Milkshake Mayfield and the Milkshake Quintet return to the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre on Saturday, September 19th at 8pm.
A world-renowned trumpeter and flugelhorn player, Milkshake has traveled the world and played with the likes of Dizzie Gillespie, Duke Ellington and Wynton Marsalis. This will be a wonderful evening of the best in smooth jazz and gospel music.
Bring a blanket and sit under the stars, or take a seat in the covered amphitheatre and enjoy great music in our own backyard! Gates open at 7pm. Tables close to the stage are available for a small fee. Bring a picnic dinner or visit the concession stand.

| Fall Storytelling Festival |

Saturday, October 17th from 11am to 4pm
|
The annual Storytelling Festival presented by the South Cobb Arts Alliance and its
 Friends of the Mable House group will be Saturday, October 17th from 11am to 4pm at the Historic Mable House on Floyd Road. It's a great day of old-fashioned family fun with historical crafts, games, panning for gold, and other activities, including tours of the 1843 Mable House and the historic grounds.
The South Cobb Lions Club will be on hand with their annual barbecue lunch; tickets are $7.
The storytellers are the centerpiece of the day - amazing individuals with the ability to transport children of all ages to other places and times with only the sound of their voices.

| Hogwarts Halloween at the Mable House |

Friday, October 30th at 5:30pm and 7:30pm
|
Come to the 1st annual Hogwarts Halloween on Friday night, October 30th! With a little imagination and a lot of fun, the Arts Center staff will create our own Great Hall. Let the sorting hat place you into a Hogwarts house, enjoy your Halloween Feast and take home your sack of candy from the Honeydukes Express trolley.
Tables for 4 are available for $50 for the 5:30pm and 7:30pm events. Space is limited, so call (770) 819-3285 for reservations. Proceeds benefit the Historic Mable House.

For the last several years, MIC volunteers have "adopted"
Mable's Tea Room
,  providing volunteers and homemade cakes and soups for this wonderful Mableton tradition. In return, the
South Cobb Arts Alliance
, which sponsors the event, makes a donation to MIC. The Tea Room has become an important fundraiser for MIC as well as a chance to serve our friends and neighbors.
MIC is volunteering on December 4th and 5th and it's a lot of fun, so come join us! Many of our volunteers from last year will be returning, but we are always ready to welcome newcomers to this fun event -- and we can always use more cakes and soups, which count towards MIC's fundraising goals.

The South Cobb Arts Alliance is also bringing back the popular Mommy & Me Teas this year. They will be held on Sunday, December 6th at 1pm and 3pm. Children and their mothers, aunts, grandmothers and special friends enjoy a light lunch served by their favorite Princesses! Tables seat 4, 6 or 8 and range from $45 to $85. New Text 911 Option Available

message to 911 for emergency help when unable to make a 911 voice call. This service will be available to the majority of wireless customers. Cobb County will receive "text to 911" calls from both unincorporated Cobb County and the cities within Cobb. Information will be relayed to the appropriate city if necessary.
All major carriers have completed integration with the Cobb County 911 system. "Text to 911" is not an "option" for calling 911 in an emergency situation, but intended for three specific situations: 1. the caller is hearing/voice impaired; 2. a medical emergency renders the person incapable of speech or 3. speaking out loud would put the caller in danger, such as a home invasion, an abduction, a domestic violence incident or an active shooter scenario.
Customers should use the texting option only when calling 911 is not an option.
Using a phone to call 911 is still the most efficient way to reach emergency help. Texting is not always instantaneous, which is critical during a life-threatening emergency. It may take slightly longer to dispatch emergency services in "text to 911" situations because of the time involved.

Decided in September...
|
The application for a
subdivision on
Old Alabama Road (Z-86) was approved by the
 Board of Commissioners. The new development will have 34 lots, a small community park, and significant buffers for the established neighborhood. Great thanks to neighbors who voiced concerns about the original plan and worked with the developer and MIC to bring about this better result.
The Board of Commissioners approved a request for
Volunteer Ridge subdivision, currently under construction at
711 Veterans Memorial Highway to increase the impervious surfaces on these residential lots from 40% to 50%. The MIC Board voted to oppose this request due to concerns about downstream flooding along Nickajack Creek and the precedent this would set for other developments. The final decision, however, refined the original request so as to limit the number of lots on which the impervious surface ratio can exceed 40%.
Coming up in October...
On October 20th, the Board of Commissioners will consider an Other Business Agenda item filed by
Nature's Supply Centre, located at
4419 Floyd Road. The hearing was postponed from the original August date. The business is requesting that it not be required to install the entire 50 foot landscape buffer adjacent to the neighborhood and the Silver Comet Trail. MIC is continuing to work with the applicant on the Landscape Plan for this property required under their rezoning last fall and expects that any issues can be resolved.
Art Frame, LLC, located at
516 Veterans Memorial Highway (near the intersection with Pebblebrook Road) (Z-59) would like to change the zoning of adjacent property from Neighborhood Retail Commercial to Light Industrial in order to expand. The applicant's attorney met with the Cobblestone Creek subdivision and MIC Zoning Committee.
MIC's Board voted to remain neutral if the applicant is willing to make changes to the plan to reduce the impact of the warehouse operations on Cobblestone Creek subdivision.
The
Church of the Pentecost USA is requesting rezoning for property located at
5606 Mableton Parkway, the old Wachovia/First Union Bank building. MIC has met with the church leadership and expressed our thoughts about the traffic flow into and out of the property, landscaping plans, and the condition of the parking lots. Additionally, the stand-alone drive-through teller windows need to be demolished.
Commissioner Lisa Cupid holds community zoning meetings each month and everyone is invited to attend. The next meeting in Mableton will be Wednesday, October 28th at 6:00PM at the South Cobb Community Center, 620 Lions Club Drive in Mableton. Contact the Commissioner's office at

| MIC Zoning Committee Meeting |

Monday, October 26th at 6:30pm
|
MIC's Zoning Committee will meet on October 26th at 6:30pm in one of the South Cobb Library Study Rooms. If you would like to join the Committee, please contact Robin Meyer, Committee Chair, and plan to attend the meeting. Space in the Study Rooms is limited, and if a large group is expected, we will need to find a different location. Please confirm the location with Robin before attending.
The Committee reviews all zoning and variance applications in 30126, meets with applicants to learn more, and then recommends a position on the application to MIC's Board of Directors. The Committee's goal is to provide citizen input during the County's public hearing process to help shape new development and redevelopment in our community. The committee needs people from all over Mableton who want to learn more about the process and contribute their ideas.

| 5th Annual Halloween Haunt After Hours |

Tuesday, October 27th, from 4:30 to 8pm
|
The 5th Annual Halloween Haunt After Hours event, sponsored by the South Cobb
 Business Association and 17 other business groups in Cobb and Douglas County will return to Six Flags Over Georgia. The Haunt provides great networking opportunities for business and nonprofit organizations, so mark your calendar now for Tuesday, October 27th from 4:30 to 8pm.
Organizers expect more than 2,000 attendees and there will be select rides open for your enjoyment, as well as a variety of entertainment. Sponsorships are still available and tickets have already gone on sale. For all the news about the Haunt,
