Faster Play Tips

Try these tips to help speed up your round and make everyone's round more fun and enjoyable:

* Play ready golf;

* Walk briskly to and from your golf carts;

* Take extra clubs for each shot, as you might need to change your club selection;

* If you are a higher handicap player, play from the shortest teeing ground possible;

* Mark down your scores on the next tee box instead of next to the green;

* Save your stories for after the round while you are having a beverage and lunch in Knickers Pub.

* Order your snacks, hot dogs or beverages on hole #8 or #17 tee by calling Knickers Pub at 239-573-3104

* Keep up with the group ahead of you;

* Build a routine that lends itself to quicker play;

* Be ready when it's your turn.

Summer Fun Begins !

Here comes summer and with it begins Junior Golf sign-ups in May, two more charity golf outings, the return of Ladies Night Golf on Tuesday nights and, best of all, the lowest golfing rates of the year!

Junior Golf sign-ups will take place on Saturday, May 10 and Saturday, May 17 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The program runs every Monday morning from June 2 to July 7 at a cost of only $20 for kids ages 7 to 18; however, keep in mind that space is limited and registrations are accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

The upcoming charity golf outings include the Samuel Belkin Memorial tournament on Sunday, May 4 and Goodwill of SWF on Saturday, May 10. Ladies Night Golf will return on Tuesday, May 27 and will be limited to the first 48 ladies who sign up each week. The cost will be $18 per player each time you play and includes an optional weekly clinic, 9 hole scramble, plus one beverage and prize drawings after golf. Look for a special E-blast reminder to come later in May.

PLAYER ALERT:
The Twilight rate time moves to 3:30 p.m. beginning May 1.

Weed Trials Begin

The weed control trials I reported on a couple of months ago have finally begun. Two test plots have been established between the #10 and #16 greens. A total of 40 one meter by three meter plots will be used to spray an experimental herbicide at various rates and combinations.

University of Florida staff will be making the applications and recording their findings. This new herbicide has been studied in a controlled setting at the university and is showing great promise for the control of Goose grass and Tropical signal grass.  By selecting sites such as ours, they can see how the herbicide will work in the real world. The trials will last for 56 days.  I am excited to participate in this study and hope that we will have a new herbicide to put into our arsenal very soon.

Reciprocal Golf

Reciprocal golf season is upon us and when I was going over the forms sent out by other clubs, I noticed some things that you should be aware of when visiting other golf clubs.

Remember, we are guests at their club and must obey their rules. A lot of clubs do not allow CARGO SHORTS. Some clubs have a rule your shirt MUST BE TUCKED IN AT ALL TIMES.  A couple of clubs do not allow you to wear your hat in the club house bar or grill. Be aware of where you drive your cart around tees and greens and keep all four wheels on the path when you stop.

Please check the club rules you are visiting before arriving in order to avoid any uncomfortable situations. Have a nice summer and we hope to see you out at Coral Oaks as well!

If you need help with your game, call Allen, Fred or Bob for a lesson.

Fantastic Fairway Feats

April Feats:

* Mike Barnes made an Eagle 2 on Hole #2 from 75 yards with a sand wedge. Nice!

* Mike Caruso made his first ever Hole In One on Hole #12 w/ a gap wedge from 118 yards. Great shot!

Remember to tell us about yours or a friend's fairway feats
so we can share them with everybody!

Quotes and Funny Stuff

Scratch Golfer

Two men are paired together in a club tournament and meet on the putting green for the first time. After introductions, the first golfer asks, "What's your handicap?" "Oh, I'm a scratch golfer," the other replies. "Really!" exclaims the first man, suitably impressed that he was paired with that caliber player. "Yes, I write down all my good scores and SCRATCH out all the bad ones!"
